Saying “there’s protein in everything these days!” used to be slightly hyperbolic. Now, though, it’s true. Protein is in everything, and the addition of it to any foodstuff imaginable doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon. For me, the straw that broke the camel’s back was when protein water started to appear. Don’t get me wrong, some of them taste good, but it felt like a point of no return: Even the most basic substance, required by all to sustain human life, was now gym-ified.

Aldi’s latest protein product exists in a similar vein, and it’s probably no surprise that people are feeling a little, shall we say, fatigued by it all. Let’s discuss.
Nature’s Nectar Protein Coconut Water
Throughout September, customers began spotting Nature’s Nectar Protein Coconut Water on Aldi shelves. These little 330ml cartons sort of instinctively feel like a cross between a protein shake and a standard coconut water, which is mainly because they’re flavored: There’s a chocolate and a vanilla option. Nonetheless, this is coconut water. Protein-infused coconut water. Not a shake. Protein in yet another drinkable option that was doing just fine without it.
The intention here, I feel, is that the electrolytes that coconut water is so abundant in have long been considered useful post-workout (regardless of whether we actually need them or not), and so adding protein makes one nutritionally efficient package. But did we need it?
Aldi Customers Definitely Don’t Think So…
Discussion around these new coconut protein waters has invariably fallen into the zone of “just because we can, doesn’t mean we should.” On Reddit, Aldi’s new pair of products have been keenly discussed, and people are tired – with some people saying that the spiraling cost of protein is largely because of items like this. “Stop the protein in everything madness. This is why I have to pay over $100 for 5lb jug of isolate now,” stated one comment, with another saying, “I am so tired of manufacturers putting protein supplements into everything. It doesn’t make hardly anything better.”
With all that said, though…these drinks are apparently pretty good, flavor-wise. Multiple people have stated how tasty they are, with the chocolate getting a particular shoutout (understandably, as chocolate and coconut are a fine pairing, and I won’t hear otherwise). If you want to replace your regular protein shake with something a little more rounded and water-adjacent, then try them out — they might not stick around for long, and who knows what Aldi has planned for its next protein infusion?
