The Best 7 Layer Dip for Party Time

The best 7 layer dip has multiple layers that are distinct in both appearance and flavor. And, spoiler alert, the best store bought 7 layer dip doesn’t even have to have 7 layers!

As a society, we’ve collectively decided that this type of dip is called 7 layer dip regardless of how many layers it actually has. I’m not sure why! What I do know is that this dip must at least have refried beans, sour cream, cheese, and black olives. Those are the most integral components of this classic dip. Depending on how many layers there actually are, it might also have diced tomatoes, scallions or onions, salsa, guacamole, and/or corn.

We tasted some of the store bought 7 layer dip options available to us and found a few that are truly outstanding and worthy of a place on the table at your next party.

Rojo’s Classic 5 Layer Dip

This is the best layer dip, not 7 layer dip because there are only 5 layers. And while it’s nowhere near as good as our #1, it is tasty! It has refried beans, salsa, guacamole, sour cream, and cheddar cheese. Why we weren’t allowed to have black olives and scallions, I’m not sure. I do miss them. If you’re not a fan of black olives and/or scallions, this is a great option for you. Plus, it’ll last a little longer in the fridge since it doesn’t have all the fresh stuff on top. That’s a nice bonus!

Albertsons 7 Layer Bean Dip

The Albertsons company (aka Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s, Acme, Tom Thumb, Randalls, United Supermarkets, Pavilions, Star Market, Haggen, Carrs, Kings Food Markets, and Balducci’s Food Lovers Market) makes the best 7 layer dip on the market. If it wasn’t for the plastic container, you wouldn’t know this wasn’t made from scratch. Not only is this an incredible dip, but you could also slap this into a warm flour tortilla and have an instant burrito. Plus, it actually has all 7 layers—beans, guac, sour cream, shredded cheese, tomatoes, scallions, and black olives! That is shockingly rare when it comes to store bought 7 layer dip. Albertsons, we love you for this one.

  • Is there any way you can make an east coast version of your taste tests? A lot of the things you recommend just aren’t available outside of the south west markets. I expect you’d need a south eastern, midwestern, and possibly northwestern version too, lol

  • Fully agree, and I’m totally not biased as someone who has worked at Albertsons for years making the dip (yes from scratch) every single day! Nice to have our effort appreciated lol!

  • When I was in my early twenties and kind of going to college. A friend worked for a company called Hot Mama’s. Their 7-layer dip was so awesome. Until that’s all I had to eat for several days in a row. Fun times!

  • Is anyone else just ROCKED to learn that scallions are the 7th layer? I am having a Mandela Effect reaction to this news.
