In case anybody out there was in any doubt whatsoever at this point, we’ll just say it one more time: Aldi’s a great place to shop if you’re on a budget. Whether you’re in the market for booze for under $10, bargain prosciutto that beats the price of other retailers, or bougie brands like Fishwife Tuna, you can find a lot in its hallowed halls, and save some dough while doing so.

But. But. It’s also true that if you’re not careful in Aldi, you can walk away having spent more than you’d like. And as retailers increasingly catch up with its cut-price goodness, it’s no longer necessarily got the lowest prices across the board. So how can you make sure you’re actually saving money? You listen to the customers. We did, at least. And now we’re bringing you what you should actually be buying.

Morning Has Broken, And Reddit Has Spoken: Here Are the Best Deals at Aldi

Naturally, the best place to go to find all this out is Reddit, where Aldi shoppers huddle together to share tips. One thread in particular turned out to be a goldmine for information. Fresh produce was one of the things that people routinely named as cheaper in Aldi than elsewhere, with fruit and veggies like cantaloupe, onions, and cilantro all named as a bargain at the German supermarket, in comparison to other retailers. Bell peppers are especially reasonable: One Redditor pointed out that “At Publix they are $3.99 FOR ONE red pepper. At Aldi like $2 for 3!” Another person stated that the peppers at Target were also more expensive than those at Aldi.

Cheese and meat are also frequently named by customers as more reasonable at Aldi than other places, especially grass fed ground beef and antibiotic-free chicken thighs. Plus, if you’re in the market for organic produce, milk, or other items, then Aldi’s also got the edge there, too, so sayeth its customers. “No one is even close to Aldi prices on these things,” said a user. Generally speaking, all your basics are going to be more cost-effective at the store, although it’s still important to do your own price comparisons.

Okay, Now What About the Fun Stuff?

We’re getting to that! Clancy’s, Aldi’s private-label line of chips, is a big draw for customers, who note that a bag of those is way more reasonable than its Lay’s equivalent. Ice cream, frozen dessert, and alcohol are also named by shoppers as being a lot cheaper than in other stores. One particular shout-out came for cherry fruit pies, which a Redditor said “are double the price everywhere else.”

If you’re in the market for something a little fancier, Aldi’s olive oil and sourdough are also named as cheaper than in other places. In all honesty, the list of things that aren’t less expensive is way shorter than the list of things that are, so if you’re buying all your groceries there, you’ll likely walk away having made some savings.
