Attention, Walmart shoppers: The Bettergoods brand is ready to help you throw a party. The days when you needed to make a special stop at Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s to snag some snacky stuff for entertaining are over. Walmart’s aesthetic, millennial-focused brand Bettergoods doesn’t nail everything, but they’ve got some good bites in the frozen aisle.

For a recent taste test, we fired up the ol’ counter top oven-air fryer combo and stuffed it full of any Bettergoods frozen item that could plausibly qualify as an appetizer. We included all the usual suspects—mini quiches and puff pastry-wrapped little morsels—and also some things that aren’t REALLY appetizers but, hey, anything’s an appetizer if you serve it as a finger food before a meal, right? So yeah, there’s a pizza in the mix, but I cut it tavern style so it would count. If you’re having company and you don’t have a Trader Joe’s nearby, here are some of the cute, creative frozen apps you can buy at Walmart.

bettergoods cacio e pepe arancini review

Cacio E Pepe Arancini

Bettergoods Cacio E Pepe Arancini

Arancini—especially frozen ones—can be really claggy and flavorless. Believe me, lack of flavor isn’t a concern with these Bettergoods arancini. These little deep-fried risotto balls are very garlicky, and they have tons of zesty black pepper flavor, too. Cacio E Pepe is traditionally made with pecorino romano, which is a notoriously salty cheese and these things really are salty as hell. I appreciate this app’s dedication to the dish that inspired it, but they probably could’ve toned it down a touch. Still … they’re delicious.

bettergoods chicken curry empanadas review

Chicken Curry Empanadas

Bettergoods Chicken Curry Empanadas

If you like samosas, you’ll like Bettergoods Chicken Curry Empanadas. They are a touch pasty in the middle, but the filling is absolutely bursting with rich, bright curry flavor. The crust could be better—it’s a little bit stiff and dry—but I’d still buy these if I needed a little bite to serve at a hypothetical dinner party.

bettergoods rosemary and garlic chicken pizza review

Rosemary and Garlic Chicken Pizza

Ultra Thin Rosemary and Garlic Chicken Pizza

This is the only pizza we tried for this taste test (read our ranking of Bettergoods frozen pizzas if you want more of those), but I included it here because it seemed very “appy” to me, kinda like a flatbread but round. And I cut it into squares to really get my point across. Plus, this is DECADENT, so it’s better as an app since you’ll probably be full after one small slice. It’s very goopy-creamy. There’s a garlic sauce (yum) and globs of ricotta along with mozzarella and smoked provolone. The chicken looks bad, but it tastes pretty good. And the whole thing is infused with rosemary flavor. This really delivers on what it promises.

bettergoods pimento cheese arancini review

Pimento and Cheese Arancini

Bettergoods Pimento and Cheese Arancini

The breaded exterior could be a touch more delicate (same goes for the Cacio E Pepe Arancini), but otherwise, these absolutely rule. The pimento cheese is salty, peppery, a little bit sweet, savory, and just a touch smoky. Like, they really captured everything good about pimento cheese in these little bites! Sure, the rice could have a bit more bite, but that tends to be an issue with frozen arancini in general. It’s definitely not a deal-breaker.

bettergoods raspberry and brie bites

Raspberry Brie Bites

Bettergoods Raspberry Brie Bites

This was a close call for second vs. first place. These little bites consist of funky, creamy, melty brie and a little bit of raspberry jam in flaky, perfectly golden-brown filo dough. They’re greasy (they’re oily to the touch when you take them out of the package), but DAMN these are fancy. The brie is actually funky, which we love, but we also recognize that rindy, moldy flavor might not be for everyone, so that’s why these little bites landed in second place. But if you love brie, rind and all, you’ll love these.

best bettergoods foods

Figs in a Blanket

Bettergoods Figs in a Blanket

We all agree these should be called Figs ON a Blanket, but that’s okay because they’re delicious all the same. The puff pastry doesn’t puff up as much as I would like, but everything else about these RULES. You get a very generous glob of a cream cheese/goat cheese mixture that’s perfectly tangy and so, so rich and creamy. And underneath that glob of cheese is a glob of fig puree. Oh, and there’s red pepper flakes in the cheese mixture, so you get tangy-salty, sweet, and a little bit of heat. This is a fancy app for Walmart!

About the Author

Gwynedd Stuart

Howdy! I’m Gwynedd, Sporked’s managing editor. I live in Los Angeles and have access to the best tacos the U.S. has to offer—but I’m a sucker for a crunchy Old El Paso taco night every now and then. I’ve been at Sporked since 2022 and I’m still searching frozen mozzarella sticks that can hold a candle to restaurant sticks. Why you should trust me: I’ve been a journalist for 20 years (yikes), a consumer of food for 40-plus years, and I’m truly hard pressed to think of foods I don’t like (or that I can’t tolerate at the very least). Oh and one time I cooked my way through Guy Fieri’s cookbook and wrote about the journey through Flavortown. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s Original Savory Thins. Fat free plain yogurt (usually Fage or Nancy’s). Honeycrisp apples. Sweet cream coffee creamer for my at-home Americanos. A frozen cauliflower crust pizza and some jarred mushrooms to top it with. Old El Paso Stand ‘N Stuff taco shells and Gardein Ground Be’f, even though I think “be’f” is a nightmarish contraction. Favorite ranking: Stouffer’s frozen dinners. I don’t own a microwave (I get my cancers the old fashioned way!), so I love taste testing things that I don’t really buy to eat at home. Least favorite ranking: Soy sauce. Don’t get me wrong, I love soy sauce—but consuming that much sodium in one sitting is probably illegal in some countries. Our frozen enchilada taste test was a close second; the smell of microwaved corn tortillas still haunts me.
