The Best Doritos Flavors, Ranked

Doritos are an elite and totally unique snack. They’re not potato chips and they’re not tortilla chips. They’re Doritos! Whether you like them or not, you cannot deny that they changed the chip game in a big way.

Chase Hilt, supervising producer at Mythical and Doritos lover, joined us for the taste test to figure out the definitive ranking of the Doritos products. There’s a long list of flavors, but these are the ones that should be making an appearance on the grazing table at your parties, in your kids’ school lunches, and as part of your late-night snacking rotation.

Best of the Best

Cool Ranch

Literally zero notes. Absolute perfection. Could not be improved in any way. Cool Ranch Doritos are the pinnacle of chips. They’re crunchy, They’re zesty. They’re iconic. What more could you want from a snack? On top of being utterly sensational on all fronts, Cool Ranch Doritos have the best seasoning coverage per chip out of all the types of Doritos we tried. I truly believe that if you don’t like Cool Ranch Doritos, you have bad taste.

Best Cheese

Nacho Cheese

There are two camps in the Doritos world: Nacho Cheese and Cool Ranch. As you might’ve noticed from my gushing in the paragraph above, I am team Cool Ranch. That being said, Nacho Cheese Doritos are very good (just not as good as Cool Ranch). The flavor is cheesy and a little zesty. My favorite part is the thick layer of cheese dust it leaves on my fingers. It’s such an iconic chip that Taco Bell turned it into a taco shell! That being said, bring back the Cool Ranch shell, Taco Bell!

Best Collab

Tapatio

I was shocked by the Tapatio Doritos when I tried them for the first time in our hot chip taste test. They are so incredibly delicious. Not only are they a really delicious Dorito, they taste exactly like Tapatio. Not hot sauce. Not generic “spicy.” Tapatio, specifically. Chase agreed! He said they “nailed that flavor” of the iconic hot sauce. Chase had the great idea that we should utilize Tapatio “dry rub” on other things because the flavor powder coating these Doritos is so tasty.

Most Unique

Spicy Sweet Chili

The Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos are the most unique flavor on the market. They have a rich umami taste that is hard to pinpoint. Danny Palumbo, my fellow Sporked staff writer, thinks they taste like soy sauce. To me, they taste like a gyoza dipping sauce. They are definitely not spicy or sweet and there is no chili anywhere to be found, but they do taste very good! Maybe Doritos should consider renaming this delicious chip?

Best Throwback

3D Chips Spicy Ranch

I found these 3D Doritos ‘90s throwbacks so bizarrely intriguing. They certainly do not taste as good as the classic Cool Ranch Doritos. The shape, however, adds such a fun, unique crunch. Chase put it perfectly: “The flavor isn’t as good, but the experience is so much better.” Don’t get me wrong, though. I do like the flavor! They taste a little more corn-y than regular Doritos. They’re Bugle-like. Plus, the ranch powder has a bumped-up garlic factor. Days after the taste test, I found myself eating handfuls of these at my desk, so I guess I love them…?

Best Spicy

Dinamitas

Other than Cool Ranch (of course), Chase liked these Dinamitas the best out of all of the Doritos we tried. Mark Catangui, Sporked social media manager, described these as “a smoother Taki.” The flavor is a little less sharp and chemically than Takis, while maintaining spice and zing. They definitely have the same Taki craveability, and you could easily eat handfuls of these at a time. Try them for yourself and let me know how you think they stack up to Takis!

Is It Hot in Here or Is It Just the 7 Best Spicy Chips?

Chocolate ice cream is the king of the ice cream world. Seriously, crack open a 1.5 quart container of Neapolitan, toss it on the counter in the break room, and see which flavor goes first.

  • Why is there no love for the wasabi ones. They were the best

    • We only review products that are currently on the market. Sadly, those aren’t made anymore!

  • whoever said the sweet and spicy chili doritos aren’t spicy or sweet and don’t have chili is insane. do you have no taste buds?

    Reply
    • Our entire team does, in fact, have taste buds! We thought the Sweet and Spicy Chili Doritos were super tasty, but not spicy or sweet at all. Rather, they have a strong umami soy sauce flavor.

      • Nah, you got a defective bag. I do understand the “soy sauce” flavor thing, but it’s most definitely the sweetest Dorito flavor, and there is a slight spice that increases after you’ve had a few of them. If nobody on your team was able to pick up those basic notes, then something was wrong with your test case.

  • Wait… Do I not see the Sweet Chili Heat Doritos on this list?? How is this even possible!

  • I live in Miami FL and some years ago I walked into a Walmart to get a few things and when I passed the chip section I saw Bar-B-Q Doritos, I said I have got to try this, and let me tell you, it was super good! The bad part is that they stopped selling it, so I wrote to the company asking about this product where can I find it, they wrote back saying that they discontinued that flavor! That made me so sad.

  • Taco flavored are great too. They taste like old school TexMex tacos.

  • This is such a bad list. No sweet chili heat, and cool ranch is number 1? I really don’t get the hype around cool ranch. They are tasteless, as are the creators of this list.

    Reply
    • They do not sell Sweet Chili Heat Doritos in America anymore so they are not eligible for this list.

  • No Spicy Nacho Doritos, heresy I say! Also not putting original Nacho at #1, what’s up with that?

  • PS, if you are going to critique their rankings. Do so politely, we are all different. Just don’t be rude, as a fan of Sporked and GMM its hard to see a great fan base be like that sometimes..

  • The fact that there are negative comments about a Doritos ranking is SO FUNNY. You are adults, find something important to be upset about. I love this ranking!
