The Best Doritos Flavors, Ranked

The best Doritos are crunchy, well-seasoned, and tasty. They should leave flavor dust all over your fingers. Doritos are an elite and totally unique snack. They’re not potato chips and they’re not tortilla chips. They’re Doritos! Whether you like them or not, you cannot deny that they changed the chip game in a big way.

There’s a long list of flavors, but these are the ones that should be making an appearance on the grazing table at your parties, in your kids’ school lunches, and as part of your late-night snacking rotation. This is the ultimate ranking of the current Doritos flavors.

Best Zesty

Tangy Ketchup

This is a new Doritos flavor and I hope it sticks around because these chips taste pretty dang good. They’re tangy, a little sweet, and have a nice tomato-y flavor. I like these much more than ketchup chips because, once again, the corn base of the Doritos pairs well with the tomato-based flavoring. Obviously, you can eat these on their own, but they would also be so good as a crust for homemade chicken tenders or a topping for a cheeseburger.

Best Throwback

3D Chips Spicy Ranch

I found these 3D Doritos, a ‘90s throwback, so bizarrely intriguing. They certainly do not taste as good as the classic Cool Ranch Doritos. The shape, however, adds such a fun, unique crunch. One of our guest tasters put it perfectly: “The flavor isn’t as good, but the experience is so much better.” Don’t get me wrong, though. I do like the flavor! They taste a little more corn-y than regular Doritos. They’re Bugle-like. Plus, the ranch powder has a bumped-up garlic factor. Days after the taste test, I found myself eating handfuls of these at my desk, so I guess I love them…?

Most Surprising

Sweet & Tangy BBQ

I named these the “most surprising” Doritos we tried because I was truly shocked by how tasty they are! I couldn’t imagine what BBQ Doritos would taste like. Once it tasted them, though, I was forever changed. The corniness of the Doritos themselves pairs perfectly with the flavor of BBQ sauce. And, as promised, they are sweet and tangy! You might be skeptical of these, but give them a chance. They’re tasty!

Best Cheese

Nacho Cheese

There are two camps in the Doritos world: Nacho Cheese and Cool Ranch. As you might’ve noticed from my gushing in the paragraph above, I am team Cool Ranch. That being said, Nacho Cheese Doritos are very good (just not as good as Cool Ranch). The flavor is cheesy and a little zesty. My favorite part is the thick layer of cheese dust it leaves on my fingers. It’s such an iconic chip that Taco Bell turned it into a taco shell! That being said, bring back the Cool Ranch shell, Taco Bell!!!

Best Flamin’ Hot

Flamin’ Hot Cool Ranch

Flamin’ Hot Cool Ranch Doritos are one of the best Flamin’ Hot chips out there. The flavor is so delicious, but my favorite thing is that it doesn’t have a weird, chemically taste that some Flamin’ Hot products have. These chips are genuinely spicy and have just a bit of that iconic Cool Ranch flavor, too. For me, these are a little subtle on the ranch, but they still taste good. If you like spicy chips and you like ranch, snag a bag of these.

Most Unique

Spicy Sweet Chili

Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos are the most unique flavor on the market. They have a rich umami taste that is hard to pinpoint. To me, they taste like gyoza dipping sauce you get at a Japanese restaurant. They are definitely not spicy or sweet and there is no chili anywhere to be found, but they do taste very good! They’re super savory and salty. My recommendation is that Doritos should consider renaming this delicious chip.

Best Classic

Cool Ranch

Literally zero notes. Absolute perfection. Could not be improved in any way. Cool Ranch Doritos are the pinnacle of chips. They’re crunchy, They’re zesty. They’re iconic. What more could you want from a snack? On top of being utterly sensational on all fronts, Cool Ranch Doritos have the best seasoning coverage per chip out of all the Doritos flavors we tried. I truly believe that if you don’t like Cool Ranch Doritos, you have bad taste.

Best of the Best

Tapatio

I was shocked by Tapatio Doritos when I tried them for the first time in our hot chip taste test. They are so incredibly delicious. Not only are they the best tasting Doritos, they taste exactly like Tapatio. Not hot sauce. Not generic “spicy.” Tapatio hot sauce, specifically. They are such perfect Doritos that they were named the best Doritos flavor on the Good Mythical Morning Doritos showdown as well!
