The Best Edible Cookie Dough if You Like It Raw

The best edible cookie dough doesn’t need to be baked in the oven to taste good. I know what you’re thinking (and, frankly, I resent the snark): All cookie dough is edible cookie dough…if you bake it. But what I’m talking about here is cookie dough you can eat raw. Yes, ready to eat cookie dough that allows you to live out your childhood dreams of licking raw dough directly from a spoon without being screamed at by your mom about getting salmonella.

It’s a great time to be alive if you’re looking for the best cookie dough to eat raw. Loads of brands are making dough that’s specifically designed to be eaten raw, and brands like Pillsbury have started using pasteurized eggs in their ready to bake cookie dough so you eat it right out of the package like the repressed six year old you are. But what’s the best cookie dough to eat raw? Well, ideally, it should taste like the forbidden fruit you remember from childhood: It should be a little bit grainy, kinda salty, and have that ineffable uncooked flavor that’s so tantalizing. Not all cookie dough nails it!

This taste test was a reader request. So sit back, grab a wooden spoon, and let’s talk about the best edible cookie dough at the grocery store.

Best Vegan Cookie Dough

Eat Pastry Vegan & Non-GMO Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough

A lot of ready to eat cookie dough can be consumed raw or cooked, so you can eat a few spoonfuls and then bake a batch of cookies—brilliant! That’s the sitch with this Eat Pastry cookie dough, the best edible cookie dough if you’re looking for something totally plant based. If you’re vegan, I don’t think you can find tastier cookie dough to eat raw. Honestly, if the package didn’t say it was vegan, I wouldn’t have guessed (and you can’t say that about very many vegan products). The consistency is super soft and scoopable, and it has that good uncooked flour flavor without tasting only like flour. If there’s any oily margarine flavor, it didn’t come through in the bites I took—I suppose the chocolate chips would cover that up. Whether or not you’re vegan, this is some of the best edible cookie dough at the grocery store.

Best Cookie Dough Bites

Ben & Jerry’s Cookie Dough Snackable Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough

If you’re looking for raw cookie dough you can eat on the go (why wouldn’t you be??), Ben & Jerry’s makes the best edible cookie dough bites we tasted. They’re highly snackable, but they still taste like actual cookie dough—not like glorified Play-Doh like other bites we tried, so many of which taste predominantly like preservatives. The chocolate chips are very chocolatey and delicious. And the grainy texture is just right. Could these ready to eat cookie dough morsels use a little more salt? Yeah, but if you’re a real cookie dough freak, these are gonna be so good piled on top of a bowl of the best cookie dough ice cream (which just happens to be made by Ben & Jerry’s), or right out of the bag while you watch a movie on the sofa.

Best of the Best

Pillsbury Cookie Dough made with Oreo Pieces

I know! This is a very unconventional pick for the #1 best edible cookie dough. You were thinking it would be chocolate chip, right? Wrong! This Pillsbury Oreo cookie dough—which is a place-and-bake cookie dough that you can also eat raw—is perfection. Edible cookie dough should be a forbidden fruit food. It should taste…not edible, just like it did when you were a kid. And that’s what this cookie dough nails. It tastes like dough, not like sweet, edible paste. You get salt. You get chocolate from the ample Oreo pieces. It’s not too sweet (so many edible chocolate chip and sugar cookie doughs were way, way too sweet). And it comes in little pre-portioned squares that are perfectly snack-sized. And hey, if you don’t eat all the cookie dough, you can go ahead and bake a batch of cookies—we did! If you’ve been craving ready to eat cookie dough since you were a child, buy this stuff asap.
