You should have a frozen pot pie in your freezer at all times. Just in case. In case of what? In case you need a filling weeknight dinner and you haven’t had time to go to the market. Or in case some long lost friend drops by and demands dinner. Or in case the craving for cozy, gravy-filled crust hits and cannot be ignored. But you can’t just have any old frozen pot pie. You need the best frozen pot pie. And, lucky for you, I just tasted a whole bunch and can tell you which are the best frozen pot pies worthy of your precious freezer space.

How we prepared the frozen pot pies

While many of the frozen pot pies we tested included microwave instructions, we wanted crisp crusts, so we cooked these frozen pot pies in a full-sized oven or in our (brand new) countertop oven. We followed the instructions and did our best to eat them while they were still warm and crisp. (Though, to me, the best frozen pot pie should still be good at room temp.)

What we looked for in the best frozen pot pie

We wanted pies with crisp, flaky, buttery, well-seasoned crusts. And, though we tried a variety of types of pot pie, we wanted the filling to be plentiful. Whether it was chicken, beef, or vegetable, we wanted there to be a lot of it and we wanted that filling to be moistened with an ample amount of gravy.

If you’re looking for the best frozen chicken pot pie, you’ll find our number one here. But if you’d like a full ranking of a variety of frozen chicken pot pies, head on over to our best frozen chicken pot pie list. If you want some variety, keep reading. Here are the best frozen pot pies you can buy.

Best frozen pot pies, ranked

Bettergoods Beef Roast Pot Pie

Best Beef Pot Pie

Bettergoods Beef Roast Pot Pie

We tried a few frozen beef pot pies and this one from Walmart’s Bettergoods brand was definitely the best frozen beef pot pie. That said, the bar is low. Most of the frozen beef pot pies out there are abominations. This one includes tender, shreddible beef chunks that actually taste like stew beef. And there’s also a ton of veg in the mix, too. The crust is buttery and crumbly, though not as good as the other Bettergoods frozen pot pie we tried. And there’s a heavy herb flavor that kind of dominates the experience. Still, it’s big, it’s pretty good, and it will hit the spot if you’re craving beef pot pie.

Blake’s Cheesy Chicken & Broccoli

Best Cheesy Pot Pie

Blake’s Cheesy Chicken & Broccoli

I really love the tangy cheesiness of the creamy filling of this frozen pot pie. And I also appreciate the presence of the broccoli—it’s there, it tastes good, and it doesn’t totally take over like frozen broccoli has the tendency to do. It’s a tasty alternative to a classic chicken pot pie and worth a try. My only note: Be sure to blast this baby in the broiler just before serving. The crust needs to crisp up.

Amy’s Vegetable Pot Pie

Best Vegetable Pot Pie

Amy’s Vegetable Pot Pie

If you’re looking for a wholesome pot pie that almost seems healthy, Amy’s makes the best frozen pot pie for you. It’s chockful of nicely cooked vegetables. And the whole wheat crust does a good job of holding everything in. It doesn’t hold a candle to the classic pot pie crusts on these other pot pies, but it does its job and makes you feel like you’re being kinder to your body. It’s the best frozen pot pie to buy when you want some vegetables but you also want something cozy.

Banquet Sausage & Gravy Deep Dish

Best Breakfast Pot Pie

Banquet Sausage & Gravy Deep Dish

This sausage and gravy pot pie is a once-a-year treat. Seriously, it’s a pool of thick, creamy, peppery sausage gravy encased in buttery crust. I don’t care how much you work out, your body can only handle that type of delicacy on an annual basis. That said, oooh, mama. What a day it will be when you do get to eat one of these cheap treats. Topped with a fried egg? That’s your whole day right there.

Marie Callender’s Plant-Based Chick’n

Best Fake Meat Pot Pie

Marie Callender’s Plant-Based Chick’n

We were all really pleasantly surprised by this vegetarian frozen pot pie from Marie Callender’s. The filling is delightful—packed with sweet, tender carrots, savory gravy, and hunks of fake chicken. Does the fake chicken taste like real chicken? No. It tastes like Gardein Chick’n. And if you’re used to that flavor, you’re going to love this meal. If you’re hoping for a vegan chicken dupe, this is not the best frozen pot pie for you. Also, if you’re hoping for a fully vegan pot pie, this is also not the best frozen pot pie for you. It’s just vegetarian, sorry! We’ll keep searching for a vegan pot pie to buy.

Banquet Turkey Pot Pie

Best Turkey Pot Pie

Banquet Turkey Pot Pie

Along with being the best frozen turkey pot pie, this is the best frozen pot pie for gravy lovers. There is so much gravy. It’s like an edible box of gravy—with a few chunks of dark turkey meat thrown into the mix. At just over a dollar, this is an umami filled deal of a meal. Just don’t look at it while you eat it. It tastes great but it looks like slop.

Bettergoods Homestyle Chicken Pot Pie

Best Family Sized Chicken

Bettergoods Homestyle Chicken Pot Pie

If you’re looking for the best chicken pot pie for one, skip to our number one pick. But if you’re interested in feeding a hungry family, Walmart’s Bettergoods frozen chicken pot pie is the best frozen pot pie to buy. The crust is really savory and crumbly (we kept going back to it, taking little nibbles throughout the taste test). And the chunks of chicken are plentiful and of a decent quality and seasoned with lots of thyme. My only quibble is it could use a bit more gravy. It’s not dry, but it is a bit gloopy. If you like your pot pies more gravied, go ahead and supplement with some of the best instant gravy we found in a different taste test.

The sweet corn and savory bacon amp up the flavor of this gravy-filled frozen pot pie and really take it to the next level. And the crust is buttery, flaky, and savory. It’s the best frozen pot pie you can buy.
