28 Kinds of Aldi Chocolate, Ranked

You can buy a whole lot of chocolate from Aldi. I know, because I recently bought all the Aldi chocolate I could find. I lived out a childhood fantasy and filled a cart with Aldi chocolate bars (big and little), Aldi chocolate truffles, chocolate-covered almonds, and more. Bar after bar, truffle after truffle—thank god for self-checkout. I don’t think I could have handled the judgment in the eyes of the cashier.

It makes sense because Aldi is a German company. And Germans love their chocolate. Much of the chocolate from Aldi is made in Europe, but it’s all much cheaper than other Belgian or German chocolate you can find at other stores. That said, it’s not all amazing. Some Aldi chocolates are better than others.

It took me two days to taste all 28 different types of Aldi chocolate (with a little help from my husband, Mike). I took some time to recover and sweat out the cocoa. And I am now ready to reveal the full list of all 28 Aldi chocolates, ranked from worst to best. Because no one else should ever have to eat this much Aldi chocolate at once ever again.

In general, I loved the mini Aldi chocolate bars—more chocolate bars should come in this mini size that’s bigger than a fun-size but smaller than a full-size bar. But the dark chocolate does not have enough flavor. It tastes like a hardened block of instant hot cocoa.

These are certainly better than the pomegranate version—they have a chewy, tangy center. But they still finish somewhat soapy. If you see these in an office and really need a sweet fix, go ahead and grab a handful. But I can’t recommend buying them with your own money.

It’s so bitter. So very, very bitter. And it coats your mouth and lasts and lasts. So if that’s your kind of chocolate, then go for it. Personally, I need more sugar.

Don’t eat this Aldi chocolate bar straight. It’s extremely bitter and so intense my eyebrows raised up above my head like a cartoon. But it does have good creaminess. Use it for baking or melt it down to coat a cookie.

While the Choceur chocolate bars are quite thick, the Moser bars are delicate and thin. This Aldi milk chocolate lives up to its name—it really is cream. It coats your mouth with milk chocolate that instantly melts. But it’s just too one note and that note is sweet. I need more cocoa in my chocolate.

I’m not a white chocolate lover but this one is pretty okay! It’s not overly sweet and it has that nice cocoa butter thing going on. This isn’t the best Aldi white chocolate but it’s the smallest Aldi white chocolate. So if you want some little white chocolate bars to keep stashed away, these are perfectly acceptable.

If you want decent dark chocolate, but mostly crunchy almonds, this Aldi chocolate bar is a fine pick. The dark chocolate is intense and fruity but it does overpower the almond flavor, so they end up acting more as a crunch agent than any sort of flavoring.

Though it says “made with hazelnut spread” on the packaging, I can’t say I got any of that from this Aldi chocolate bar. Still, the chocolate is very, very creamy if not the most flavorful. I think it’d be good in cookies or even used as a Hershey’s sub in s’mores.

I still didn’t get a ton of hazelnut flavor from this Aldi dark chocolate, but my husband was adamant that it would be a delightful (and very European) afternoon pick-me-up paired with a cup of coffee or an espresso. The chocolate is the star here. It’s dark and rich and a little bit bitter.

I wanted this to be the Aldi dark chocolate equivalent of a giant Andes mint chocolate. But it’s just not quite there. The chocolate isn’t flavorful enough. There’s a ton of mint flavor but there’s not enough bite in the chocolate to balance it out. Still, this would be nice on a pillow or at the end of a meal.

They are melty and very smooth, but there’s a touch of a smoky finish that keeps them from being as good as they could be. But they will still really convince people that you are a true grown-up host.

Instead of being filled with gooey chocolate, this Aldi chocolate bar is filled with little crunchy bits of caramel, which add a great texture, though not a ton of flavor. When you see caramel on a package, you expect gooey, rich caramel. So, this falls flat when it comes to satisfying any sort of caramel craving. But I do really like the texture.

It’s bitter, it’s a little sweet, it’s salty, it’s snappy. It’s a good Aldi dark chocolate bar. I only wish the salt was a bit more evident. While you can certainly taste it, I expect big salt crystals when a chocolate bar advertises sea salt. It’s a very good late afternoon chocolate to enjoy with that final cup of coffee or Diet Coke.

The peanut butter in these peanut butter cups tastes like if actual peanut butter and Reese’s peanut butter had a baby. It’s delightfully salty and sweet. Choceur Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Caramel

These chocolate-covered caramels are not dainty. They are, as I wrote in my notes, “honking pieces of caramel.” And the caramel inside is thick and rich. The salt is the hero—it really adds a lot of intrigue and depth. The chocolate itself just melts away; it’s practically negligible. But the combination of gooey caramel and salt cannot be denied, so it remains number three on this list of the best Aldi chocolate.

I didn’t expect to be wowed by this Aldi chocolate bar but it blew me away. Like all Moser Roth bars, it’s actually a few smaller, foil-covered bars packaged as one big bar, which is such smart packaging because it keeps the chocolate fresh. The creamy chocolate is studded with tiny bits of toffee—very, very tiny. They give the bar a wonderful, crackly texture and pops of burnt sugar flavor. The toffee debris is perfectly dispersed throughout. This is hands down the best Aldi chocolate bar.
