If you grew up in Mexico or in an area that borders Mexico (SoCal, South Texas, etc.), you probably have plenty of thoughts about the best Mexican candy. I grew up in New York and Florida, so it isn’t super nostalgic for me (I grew up on weird redneck candy like Chick-O-Sticks and Cow Tales), but I’m a new fan. And I gotta say, if you grew up eating this stuff, I’m downright impressed—a lot of the Mexican candies we tasted are spicy as hell! Look at you cool-ass kids and your spicy candy! I bet you skipped school a lot and never got caught, too. Know any rad skateboard tricks? Yeah, I’m sure you do.

How we picked the candy for our taste test

Well, as much as I hate to say it, Amazon kind of helped. In addition to a few items I know people have a particular affinity for—Duvalin, Bubu Lubu, etc.—I was able to buy a Mexican candy variety mix that contained a lot of hot hits, like Pulparindo and Skwinkles Salsagheti, my new favorite candy concept and new favorite name for a food, period.

Here are the best Mexican candies, according to your favorite Mexican candy neophytes.

Mexican Candy!

Lucas Muecas Chamoy

This is like a Baby Bottle Pop but shaped like a tongue and also spicy. I mean, it’s a downright sexy candy! You suck the lollipop and then dip it in a spicy, tangy chile powder and then suck it again. These come in different flavors, but we got the chamoy flavor in our variety pack and it’s good. This is the best Mexican candy if you’re a Baby Bottle Pop or Fun Dip fan who can handle some heat.

pulparindo chamoy review

Mexican Candy!

Pulparindo Chamoy

Pulparindo is shaped like an Airhead, but it’s more like gritty fruit leather than candy. I realize that doesn’t sound terribly appealing, but I promise, Pulparindo Chamoy absolutely rules. It’s like eating delicious, spicy clay. There’s a Tajin-like spice mix in the chewy, fruity candy strip, which has a rich, lovely apricot flavor. It’s chewy, a little savory, a little spicy, and really delicious.

Mexican Candy!

Pelon Mini Sabor a Tamarindo

This Mexican candy consists of a plastic tube filled with tamarind candy paste. You push the plunger and the candy squishes out of little holes, kind of like a Play-Doh hair salon. We quickly learned that a lot of the best Mexican candies are interactive, and this certainly is.

Mexican Candy!

Lucas Skwinkles Salsagheti

I’m VERY obsessed with this Mexican candy. You get a little dish of spaghetti made from watermelon licorice along with a packet of tamarind sauce. The watermelon noodles are covered in chile powder, so they’re sweet and spicy. The sauce is sweet and savory. It doesn’t come with a utensil, so it’s a little messy, but it’s just such a weird, tasty little thing, I was willing to deal with saucy fingers.

Mexican Candy!

Ricolino Duvalín

Have you ever wanted to eat frosting? Like, just frosting. No cupcake. No Dunkaroo for dunking. Well, Duvalin is the best Mexican candy for you. It’s just a little tray of creamy, sweet frosting you can eat like a little goblin. We tried the strawberry-vanilla variety, but I’d venture to say the chocolate-strawberry-vanilla is even better.

Mexican Candy!

Ricolino Bubu Lubu

We love Bubu Lubu. It’s one of our favorite candy bars, and since it’s from Mexico, it had to make this list. It has a thin, crackly chocolaty coating around a layer of marshmallow and a layer of strawberry jelly. If you like those Joyva jelly rings, you’ll love Bubu Lubu. Plus, you can get a pack of eight bars for like $3. (Well, for now anyway.)

Mexican Candy!

De La Rosa Mazapan

Mazapan is like marzipan but made with peanuts instead of almonds. We love it! It’s like halva but peanutty. It’s sweet and it dissolves in your mouth. I’d always seen this Mexican candy at convenience stores, but I’d never tried it. We all agreed it’s the best Mexican candy!

About the Author

Gwynedd Stuart

Howdy! I’m Gwynedd, Sporked’s managing editor. I live in Los Angeles and have access to the best tacos the U.S. has to offer—but I’m a sucker for a crunchy Old El Paso taco night every now and then. I’ve been at Sporked since 2022 and I’m still searching frozen mozzarella sticks that can hold a candle to restaurant sticks. Why you should trust me: I’ve been a journalist for 20 years (yikes), a consumer of food for 40-plus years, and I’m truly hard pressed to think of foods I don’t like (or that I can’t tolerate at the very least). Oh and one time I cooked my way through Guy Fieri’s cookbook and wrote about the journey through Flavortown. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s Original Savory Thins. Fat free plain yogurt (usually Fage or Nancy’s). Honeycrisp apples. Sweet cream coffee creamer for my at-home Americanos. A frozen cauliflower crust pizza and some jarred mushrooms to top it with. Old El Paso Stand ‘N Stuff taco shells and Gardein Ground Be’f, even though I think “be’f” is a nightmarish contraction. Favorite ranking: Stouffer’s frozen dinners. I don’t own a microwave (I get my cancers the old fashioned way!), so I love taste testing things that I don’t really buy to eat at home. Least favorite ranking: Soy sauce. Don’t get me wrong, I love soy sauce—but consuming that much sodium in one sitting is probably illegal in some countries. Our frozen enchilada taste test was a close second; the smell of microwaved corn tortillas still haunts me.
