Overnight oats are an unlikely trendy food. It’s like if gruel was suddenly cool. It’s mush. In fact, one of the most popular overnight oats brands out there is straight up called Mush overnight oats. Oh yeah, there are overnight oats brands now. You can find them in the dairy aisle near the yogurt. And there are lots of them. Because we are too busy and can’t be bothered to make our own cold glop.

You might think all premade overnight oats taste the same—but you would be wrong. (It’s okay to be wrong! That’s how we learn! Don’t be sad!) Anyway, there are so many flavors out there and not all of them work—some of them taste quite bad (please don’t pair coconut milk with artificial peach, brands).

Over the course of two taste tests, we tried nearly 30 different containers of overnight oats (including chocolate overnight oats, banana overnight oats, apple cinnamon overnight oats, coffee overnight oats, and even overnight oats shakes) from four different overnight oats brands (Mush overnight oats, brekki overnight oats, Trader Joe’s overnight oats, and Oats Over Night) and nine overnight oats flavors made the cut. Here they are, in all their gloopy glory.

Brekki Cold Brew Coffee

brekki Cold Brew Coffee

The more I ate this brekki flavor, the more I liked it. It’s shockingly mild for a cold brew-flavored thing. But there is definitely coffee in the mix (it’s made with actual espresso beans). It’s creamy and not quite as thick as some of the other brekki overnight oats flavors. And there are pleasing little crunchy bits for textural variety. It’s not for everyone, but if you love the cozy flavor of coffee and can’t get enough of it, then give these premade overnight oats a go.

Brekki Choco Coconut

Best Coconut Overnight Oats

brekki Choco Coconut

Like the brekki Dark Chocolate overnight oats (more on that in a second), the Choco Coconut flavor really leans hard into the dark chocolate flavor. It tastes like an intense chocolate dessert—something called Death by Chocolate and Coconuts on a restaurant menu. It’s ultra thick with a pudding-like texture. And the coconut flavor isn’t overwhelming. If you want chocolate—but not just chocolate—this is the best overnight oats cup to buy.

Brekki Dark Chocolate Overnight Oats

Best Chocolate Overnight Oats

brekki Dark Chocolate Overnight Oats

Made with almond milk, this dairy-free batch of overnight oats tastes like deep, dark chocolate. It’s not super-sweet, but instead has that bitter dark chocolate thing going on. Still, it does feel like you’re eating chocolate pudding in the morning. It’s super creamy. It’s the grown-up way to start your day with chocolate and the best chocolate overnight oats we tried.

Mush Peanut Butter Chocolate

Best Peanut Butter Chocolate Overnight Oats

Mush Peanut Butter Chocolate Overnight Oats

I had high hopes for Mush overnight oats, but most of their offerings were super watery. This one, though, is much less watery and much more creamy. I think that’s because it’s made with oat milk rather than almond milk or coconut milk, like some of the other Mush overnight oats. It’s extremely flavorful—no bland oats here. It is faithful to the promise of its label; it tastes like slightly salty peanut butter and sweet chocolate. It is definitely decadent, but it’s sweetened with coconut sugar and dates rather than standard sugar.

Brekki Apples & Cinnamon

Best Apple Cinnamon Overnight Oats

brekki Apples & Cinnamon Overnight Oats

Make sure you stir these premade overnight oats—the apples are on the bottom. There are also crunchy almonds in the mix, which add some much needed texture to the mush. Once you mix everything up, it comes together to taste like the inside of an apple breakfast bar. It’s not too sweet; it’s creamy and warming and hearty. These apple cinnamon overnight oats are definitely the best overnight oats to eat while admiring some autumnal foliage (or the ever-blossoming flowering trees if you’re in SoCal like we are).

Best Plain Overnight Oats

brekki the Original Overnight Oats

The OG brekki overnight oats aren’t just plain old oats. They’re mixed with almonds and ancient grains and just a touch of sweetness. Pick up these premade overnight oats if you’re all about customization. It’s a perfect blank canvas for things like seasonal fruit like berries or cooked apples, or nut butters, or tiny chocolate chips. It’s creamy. It’s yummy. It almost took the top spot as the best overnight oats, tbh, but it’s just a little too one note to claim that title.

Best Almondy Overnight Oats

Best Almondy Overnight Oats

Trader Joe’s Almond Butter Chia Overnight Oats

While I did not enjoy Trader Joe’s overnight oats flavored with vanilla or pumpkin spice, I was taken by this extremely thick and creamy blend. If you’re not interested in actually seeing the oats in your overnight oats, then pick up a few of these Trader Joe’s overnight oats. The oats seem to have been pureed a bit, so you’re eating more of a breakfast pudding than cold oatmeal. Don’t worry, though, there’s still some textural variety thanks to the chia seeds, which pop and crunch in your mouth. It’s super almondy and even a little salty with the sweet. I will definitely be buying these again.

Oats Over Night Shake Maple Brown Sugar

Best Over Night Oats Shake

Oats Over Night Shake Maple Brown Sugar

I love this stuff. All you do is pour water into the bottle, shake, and leave in the fridge overnight. And then, in the morning, your patience is rewarded with delicious, drinkable slop packed with 15g of protein. Seriously, it looks disgusting but it tastes so good. Made with oats, pea protein, maple sugar, chia seeds, flaxseeds, oat flour, and Himalayan pink salt, it’s creamy, toasty, and pleasantly maple-y with some good bits of crunch from the chia seeds. The whole Sporked team really loved this gruel. It’s definitely the best overnight oats brand to buy if you want breakfast on the go.

Brekki Bananas & Maple Brown Sugar Overnight Oats

Best of the Best

brekki Bananas & Maple Brown Sugar Overnight Oats

The best overnight oats we tasted are these banana overnight oats from brekki. Fake banana flavor is never my jam, but these banana overnight oats taste like real, actual banana flavor—complete with that touch of acidity missing from fake banana flavor. The overnight oats themselves are hearty and creamy with little bits of crunchy almonds. It ends with a delicious brown sugar flavor—though I didn’t detect a ton of maple. But that’s okay. It doesn’t need it. It’s all about the banana. It’s like banana bread and overnight oats had a tasty baby you could pop into your bag and eat in the car. These are the best premade overnight oats to buy and, judging by the sheer number of winning products on this list, brekki is the best overnight oats brand overall. Congrats, brekki! Thanks for the cold, delicious gruel.

Justine Sterling

Hi! I’m the editor-in-chief of Sporked. I will never turn down a fresh-shucked oyster but I’ll also leap at whatever new product Reese’s releases and I love a Tostitos Hint of Lime, even if there is no actual lime in the ingredients. Why you should trust me: I have been writing about food and beverages for well over a decade and am an avid at-home cook and snacker. I began my career writing about fine dining and recipes, moved into cocktails and spirits, and now I talk about groceries. If you can eat it or drink it, I’ve probably written about it. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s dried okra. Appleton Farms prosciutto from Aldi. Some sort of Trader Joe’s cheese (I’m into the aged gouda at the moment). Frozen waffles (usually the Eggo Cinnamon Toast Minis). Spindrift water (loving the Cosmopolitan right now). Favorite ranking: Smoked salmon. Imagine me as Scrooge McDuck but instead of coins I’m diving into a vault of slippery smoked salmon slices. Pure joy. I also found some real steals in that taste test! Least favorite ranking: Canned oysters. I had such high hopes for this but it quickly became a chore. The kitchen smelled like an uncleaned aquarium.
