The best slider buns aren’t easy to find. There just aren’t a lot of them at the grocery store! Don’t we all love small burgers? What gives? Well, when we first conducted this taste test, we only tried one brand that was worthy of ranking among the best slider buns. This time around, I’m pleased to report that I was able to add two more exemplary (and delightfully small) burger buns to the list.

What do we want from the best slider buns?

Well, different slider buns are good for different things. Some of these are light and airy and great for little ham sandwiches for your next tailgate party. Others are sturdy enough to sop up the juices from a burger patty cooked med-rare. But here’s what all the best slider buns have in common:

  • A soft, supple bite. No brittle buns, plz! Eating small burgers can be messy enough without the bun falling apart in your fingers.
  • Flavor, but not too much flavor. The bun doesn’t need to be the star here—we want to load these little things up with all sorts of good stuff and we want those fixings to be what shines.

If small burgers are on the menu this BBQ season, here are the buns you need to buy.

Best Basic Slider Buns

Kroger White Sliders

Kroger’s white slider buns aren’t making this list because they are particularly remarkable, but instead because they are totally unremarkable. The other tiny burger buns on this list are all pretty unique. These are as standard as it comes and if you’re in the mood for a very standard slider—burger patty! lettuce! tomato slice! American cheese!—then these are the buns to buy. —Gwynedd Stuart

King’s Hawaiian Pretzel Sliders

If you want a slider bun that’s very sturdy and a little bit sweet, here ya go. These pretzel buns are soft with the perfect amount of chew. The flavor is pretty bold—even blindfolded, you’d know these were pretzel buns by their distinct malty flavor. We also like that the sprinkle of coarse salt offsets the sweetness of the rolls themselves. —Jordan Myrick

King’s Hawaiian Sweet Slider Buns

If you like King’s Hawaiian rolls, you’re going to love these little burger buns. They’re sweet without tasting like dessert. They sop up sauce like a dream. They are pillowy soft. I want to put ham and Swiss and honey mustard on these, and then pop them into the oven for a toasty little snack. They would also make the cutest little chicken salad sandwiches for a book club snack or Bachelorette watch party spread. Buy these now. Thank me later. —Jordan Myrick

Marketside Brioche Slider Rolls

If you’ve ever had small burgers as passed apps at a fancy soiree, they were probably served on buns just like these. Walmart’s brioche slider buns are for gourmet burgers, even if they aren’t totally convincing as brioche. There’s a little bit of eggy flavor on the finish and they have a certain fattiness that I like, but they’re not as light as I’m used to brioche being. That just makes them perfect for nice, rare beef sliders. The juices are gonna just get all up in this roll. I like the height too. They really seem like something from a fancy gastro pub and they’ll be even better toasted on the grill. These are so good they bumped King’s Hawaiian from the top spot. Nice one, Walmart. —Gwynedd Stuart
