It’s safe to say that Bobby Flay knows what he’s doing in the kitchen. The TV personality may never be far from our screens, but he’s usually cooking up a storm on them (or judging other people’s cuisine), and that’s only when he’s not tending to one of his restaurants or writing yet another cookbook. This is a man that you shouldn’t think twice about taking culinary advice from, particularly when it comes to which ingredients to buy.
So, when Mr. Flay says that he uses Kerrygold unsalted butter above any other brand, you’d better believe that we paid close attention. Thankfully, you don’t have to head to some artisanal food store to find it: You can grab a stick at your local Walmart.
Bobby Flay’s Love Of Kerrygold Is Connected To His Roots
Flay discussed his admiration of Kerrygold in an article on All Recipes, during which he also linked his love of the brand to his family lineage. “I have some Irish blood in me, so I go with Kerrygold. I just know it’s going to taste good and grassy in the best way,” he stated. Unsalted is always better, said Flay, because then you can control the level of saltiness in the butter and in your final dish. (Controversial opinion, if you ask us.) Plus, all of that smooth flavor shines through—and thanks to Kerrygold’s 82% butterfat, it’s in pretty rich supply. That butterfat also means it acts as an excellent baking ingredient, providing both flavor and structure to your dishes.
Flay is far from the only person to opt for Kerrygold above other butters, and the brand has an incredible reputation amongst foodies and professional chefs alike. Kerygold Unsalted Butter even won a gold medal in the 2025 International Cheese And Dairy Awards, an annual competition that’s been handing out plaudits since 1897. With more than 125 years of knowledge in the can, you’d be a fool to doubt that judging panel.
Bobby Flay’s Second Choice Is a French Brand
If you can’t track down any Kerrygold, then Flay says that the next best thing is Plugrà. This French butter has a similarly high fat content, which gives it its smooth, creamy flavor. Both Kerrygold and Plugrà also ranked two of the top three places in our own best butter taste test, with the top spot going to Vermont Creamery’s Cultured Butter with Sea Salt. Hey, the Irish brand can’t win them all, right?
As for how Bobby Flay uses his unsalted butter—well, it probably comes as no surprise that he throws it into a lot of dishes. He throws butter in everything from his cornbread to his peach cobblers to his scrambled eggs, and he also likes to whip up compound butters of his own. Excuse us while we go and grab a stick of Kerrygold and do the same thing. Just don’t be tempted to think you can get away with Aldi’s Kerrygold dupe. Trust us, it’s just not the same.
