Sometimes we forget about some of the more kid-friendly Fourth of July traditions. Sure, there’s the ritual of almost blowing your fingers off while lighting fireworks in the backyard, a litany of dangerous cookout mistakes, or trauma-dumping to your entire family after one too many. But what about the wholesomeness of Bomb Pops, America’s favorite popsicle? I remember looking forward to raiding the freezer for those delightfully ambiguous-tasting treats that were more refreshing than a dip in the pool on a hot day. And the fact that they were decked out in red, white, and blue meant they were guaranteed at every July cookout.

For the modern era and America’s 250th birthday, Bomb Pops are getting a makeover. Don’t fret―they’ll still look like something out of Uncle Sam’s wildest fever dream, but instead of funky artificial dyes, Bomb Pops will be colored with dyes from natural food sources. And almond moms everywhere rejoiced.

Do They Taste The Same?

According to the company, Bomb Pops taste exactly the same as they did pre-purge of artificial dyes, with the taste tests to back it up. I fully support Bomb Pop’s dedication to preserving an American summer staple (71 years in the making, I might add) while helping families feel a little bit better about their snack choices. And the fact that they could do it while keeping the iconic taste the same is a major win. And what taste is that, you ask? Even though they all end up meshing into one mystery flavor, the company says the three individual flavors in the colorful rocket pop are cherry, lime, and blue raspberry―a combo that, oddly enough, works.

Where To Get Them

Just like regular ol’ Bomb Pops, you’ll be able to find the new crunchy-granola-hippie Bomb Pops at major stores like Wal-Mart, Target, Amazon, Publix, Safeway, and whatever the most popular grocery store in your state is. It’s unclear whether or not some of the OG nasty food dye Bomb Pops are still floating around on store shelves out there. Just to be safe, keep an eye out for the “colors from natural sources” label that Bomb Pops so graciously added to the front of every popsicle box. The company didn’t divulge exactly what natural sources provide the colors for the new-and-improved pops, but (not to go full RFK) it’s probably for the best that petroleum-based Red 40 is out of the picture.
