Burger King has heard your complaints and is giving the Whopper a makeover. Here’s what’s changing about the King’s signature sandwich.

Is it strange to say that we get a little nervous when fast food chains announce that they’re altering their best-selling items? There’s a reason why these things have worked so well for so long, folks. Think about it. The Big Mac. McNuggets (without caviar). The Whopper. Yes, they may not be the best fast food there is, but their consistency feels very satisfying.
Until customers start to feel that they’re a bit less consistent, that is; then things do have to change. Burger King’s recent announcement that it’s going to “elevate” the Whopper (for the first time in nearly a decade) had us a touch concerned, but the good news is that it’s doing so in response to customer feedback. Let’s hope this leads to a better burger for all. Here’s what it’s changing.
Better Buns Mean Better Burgers
It should be said up top that Burger King’s not trying to change its Whopper beyond recognition here. Instead, it’s making small tweaks to it, which it hopes will improve the overall experience of eating its iconic sandwich. Its beef is remaining unchanged: That 100% flame-grilled patty that forms the core of each burger will stay the same, so if you had a problem with that part, then…yeah. No dice.
It’s bun, though, is getting a makeover. In its announcement, Burger King stated that the Whopper will now have “a more premium, better tasting bun, served in a box to ensure it makes it to Guests exactly the way it left the kitchen.” Serving it in a box will also help ensure that its new, freshly sliced toppings won’t get crushed and smushed up.
Burger King has also stated that it’ll start using “better tasting mayo” on its Whoppers. Now, we should point out that BK is being a little bit elusive on the specifics of how both the mayo and the bun will taste better, and what’s different about them; we would love a touch more info there. Until then, though, we guess we’ll just have to try this new sandwich ourselves.
Why Now?
Although generally speaking, the Whopper is still considered one of the better fast food burgers by a lot of people, there’s no denying that people have noticed that standards are slipping. Its bun in particular gets a lot of criticism, with one person on Reddit calling it “absolutely terrible.” We appreciate BK’s bespoke approach to improving this burger without changing it too much, but it all has to work as a whole.
Burger King’s move to a brighter Whopper future also coincides with a more general shift in fast food towards quality. Customers are increasingly being asked to pay more if they’re not ordering value meals, and they want genuinely good food for the price. Now, if the restaurant could just stop putting bacon on its veggie burgers, then that’d be great.
