I’ve covered some strange combinations in my time here at Sporked: steak jewelry, pizza soda, and others that I can’t even remember. Moving forward, I have a new bar for “weird” to clear: McNugget Caviar. Yes, the Golden Arches want to give you an “upscale yet effortless” Valentine’s Day experience by classing up the four most iconic shapes in fast food. McDonald’s was nice enough to send over an early kit; let’s see whether this is a match made in heaven.

McDonald’s McNugget Caviar

Pros: I wasn’t expecting this to work as well as it did. While I don’t have the most caviar experience, I can tell this variety is particularly smooth compared to previous examples I’ve had—which explains the instructions including a warning to open your caviar tin carefully so you don’t damage the “grains” inside.

Adding these delicate pearls to a fresh McNugget makes for a unique mix of cold and warm aligned in saltiness. McDonald’s didn’t skimp on the caviar either; the Italian-raised Baerii Sturgeon caviar included in the kit retails for $85 an ounce. This is, surprisingly, an overall pleasant experience…

Cons: …at the expense of being absurd and the complete alternative to what you want from caviar or McNuggets. I tried a few Caviar McNuggets for the novelty, but I ended up eating the grand majority of my 20-pack dipped in McDonald’s’ solid Creamy Chili or Hot Honey sauces because that’s how they should be eaten.

Additionally, the recommended layer of crème fraîche does not add to the experience—quite the opposite. While a caviar-topped McNugget offers a new interplay of temperature, texture, and flavor, adding this fatty alternative to sour cream truly muddles the end result.

How do I try McNugget Caviar for myself?

Caviar normally comes with a hefty price point, but the Golden Arches are actually giving away these McNugget Caviar kits. Each kit includes a 1oz tin of McNugget Caviar by Paramount Caviar, a $25 McDonald’s gift card (netting you anywhere from 40 to 80 McNuggets, depending on your region), a tub of crème fraîche, and a lovely Mother of Pearl caviar spoon to really play the part. Head to McNuggetCaviar.com on February 10th at 11am EST to secure yours while supplies last. Or, just spring for one of our budget caviar picks (all under $25) and some of our top frozen nuggets for a DIY experience.
