I regret to inform you that the Burger King fry discourse is back. And that’s because BK has officially launched new “Crispy Fries” in Canada, alongside the revamped Whopper that’s been getting a lot of attention here in the states. It’s true that we in the U.S. just got the new Whopper, not the new fries—which could be a good or bad thing, depending on who you ask.

And before you yell at me: Just because BK soft-launched these new fries in Canada doesn’t mean they won’t show up stateside, okay? They did this with the Maple Bourbon BBQ Whopper, which first launched in Canada and then popped up here for a limited release in 2024. And now, guess what: it’s back on the menu as of February of this year. I’m taking that as a sign that BK might be getting a little silly with their menu releases this year. Anything is possible.
Now, whether or not you want these new Burger King french fries to replace their current fry recipe is a separate issue. Don’t worry, I’ll be speaking on that shortly. But first:
What do the new Burger King Crispy Fries taste like?
I’ll tell you right now, BK didn’t just lightly tweak their fry recipe. The change is pretty drastic. According to early food reviews (including a very thorough review from this nice Canadian man—thank you for your service, sir), the new fries seem to be way thinner and shorter than classic BK fries, with a little more crisp and firmness to them.
Hmm. What does that sound like to you? Because that sounds like McDonald’s french fries to me. It’s a definite departure from their current thick, floppy, battered french fries, which they introduced way back in 2011 (the Dinosaur Age) to stand out from McDonald’s and other chains.
I could be reaching here, but it almost seems like BK is testing out these McDonald’s fry dupes on a Canadian audience to gauge reception.
Are these replacing the current Burger King fries, or being added as a new fry option to order?
It seems like a full replacement, fam. I can’t find any evidence suggesting that you can still order classic Burger Fries in Canada. What’s interesting here is that they didn’t announce this change very loudly. It was definitely a quiet roll-out… perhaps to avoid this exact discourse.
Ariana, do you want Burger King to change their current fry recipe? I so value your opinion on the subject.
Wow. Thank you so much. Um, here’s the deal. I’m going to quote @autobahn from this Reddit thread, who makes a very valid point: “Fries are good if they’re fresh. The problem is these chains refuse to hold their franchisees to any standards at all. So they keep releasing ‘new’ formulas that just go further and further down the rabbit hole of finding ways to ‘fix’ the problem without actually solving the core issue.”
Hard agree, my dude, hard agree. I think BK has one of the most fresh-tasting burgers in the game. But their fries do not match that standard, and you know what, I’m okay with that. I do not expect fast food chains to perform miracles. If I want high-quality, truly fresh fries, I’m going to Five Guys, end of discussion. If I want yummy, highly addictive fries that don’t taste fresh but can, somehow, cure my migraine, I’m going to McDonald’s.
All is to say… I don’t think you can really go wrong here, BK. As long as the Whopper exists, you can keep testing out new fries ad nauseum. My only advice: Have you considered bringing back your curly fries? Permanently?I really think that could solve your problem, man.
