We Tried the New and Improved Burger King Whopper—Is It Really Better?

Burger King’s most iconic menu item has been upgraded. No, I’m not talking about the Crossan’wich or those greasy little French toast sticks (those are perfect as-is)—I’m talking about the Burger King Whopper. Now you can “have it your way,” particularly if your way is…“better,” I suppose.

What’s new and improved about the new and improved Whopper? 

I don’t eat a lot of fast food burgers (kinda like McDonald’s CEO, am I right?), but when I do, I’m a Whopper guy. I love that you can smell Burger King a block away, I love the flavor of their flame-broiled patties, and, I have to admit, I kinda love the sheer amount of mayonnaise they put on their hamburgers. Like, sure, if you’re gonna go for it, really go for it. What I’m saying is, Whoppers pretty much rule—so what did they fix?

Here’s how the Whopper is different according to the brand: 

  • A better tasting bun. No details, just better tasting. 
  • It comes in a box now. I guess they came in a paper wrapper before? I’d never really thought about it!
  • Better tasting mayo. If the mayo tasted bad before, I neglected to noticed, but, admittedly, I’m pretty mayo-positive.

I tried the new Whopper and here’s what I thought.

Pros: I do think they fixed up the bun a little bit. As I said, I’m not downing these suckers every day or anything, but the bun always seemed like an afterthought. Now that I think of it, maybe the buns were always a little dry and brittle? Anyway, the bun is good now. It’s very soft and tastes a little bit sweet; my colleague Justine Sterling thought it tasted a little like a Hawaiian roll. I really don’t think there was ever a problem with their mayo, and there still isn’t—it’s great. As for the box, sure! It’s cardboard so it doesn’t seem hugely wasteful and it definitely keeps the burger from getting all squashed if it winds up at the bottom of a bag full of other items. 

Cons: If you don’t like Whoppers and were hoping for some sort of major Jim Carrey-style facelift, you’ll probably be disappointed. This is still a Whopper (positive) and I sort of doubt that anyone who doesn’t work in Burger King’s R&D department could tell the difference if they weren’t tasting the “new” burger alongside the “old” one.

All in all, it’s a good sandwich—one you’ll want to take a normal-human-being-sized bite of.

Howdy! I’m Gwynedd, Sporked’s managing editor. I live in Los Angeles and have access to the best tacos the U.S. has to offer—but I’m a sucker for a crunchy Old El Paso taco night every now and then. I’ve been at Sporked since 2022 and I’m still searching frozen mozzarella sticks that can hold a candle to restaurant sticks. Why you should trust me: I’ve been a journalist for 20 years (yikes), a consumer of food for 40-plus years, and I’m truly hard pressed to think of foods I don’t like (or that I can’t tolerate at the very least). Fat free plain yogurt (usually Fage or Nancy’s). Honeycrisp apples. Sweet cream coffee creamer for my at-home Americanos. A frozen cauliflower crust pizza and some jarred mushrooms to top it with. Old El Paso Stand ‘N Stuff taco shells and Gardein Ground Be’f, even though I think “be’f” is a nightmarish contraction. Favorite ranking: Stouffer’s frozen dinners. I don’t own a microwave (I get my cancers the old fashioned way!), so I love taste testing things that I don’t really buy to eat at home. Least favorite ranking: Soy sauce. Don’t get me wrong, I love soy sauce—but consuming that much sodium in one sitting is probably illegal in some countries. Our frozen enchilada taste test was a close second; the smell of microwaved corn tortillas still haunts me.

    They messed up my favorite burger. It’s smaller and less flavorful, there is hardly any mayonnaise on it anymore and the toppings seem less than before! If you get a two whopper deal the bag won’t even shut cause of the stupid fucking boxes. I’ve tried them several times and they suck compared to the old ones.

    Burger is much smaller than the bun. Only need one hand to eat. And that is suppose to be an improvement? Why call it a Whopper when it is tiny? I will only live with fond memories, never to eat a Whopper again!!

    I was very disappointed in the New Whopper. I expected it to taste like it did when I was a kid back in the 60s. It now has a thicker bun, no onion, less mayo and overall tastes dry. I prefer the previous whopper, it was bigger, the bun was flatter, tons of mayo and red onion. My favorite burger has died.
