Personally, I think themed snacking is at its peak in the fall and winter seasons. From pumpkin spice and Halloween colors to the iconic Christmas spirit, it’s back-to-back thematic opportunity. This year, that seems to be more true than ever as marketing and launches for the fall season began in July. But, of course, that was just the early tease of the season to come. Now, the rest of the companies are joining in on their launches, and we’re seeing an aggressive influx of fall treats already.

When I think of iconic snacking, Hostess’ snack cakes inevitably pop up in my head. This year, they have six new products hitting the fall scene to help everyone get in the festive spirit and meet all of their snacking needs. Three of the snacks are intended for the generalized fall season and later on, we will see another three products perfect for celebrating the Halloween festivities.
A Taste Of Autumn
The three fall flavored snacks I would expect to basically be exclusively pumpkin spice flavored. And, that’s partly true, but there’s also a maple treat that has me excited for my next fall road trip. The Twinkie flavor they’re releasing is, of course, pumpkin spiced. The cake is going to remain the same for the Twinkies, and the pumpkin spice flavoring is gonna come through in the crème filling.
The Hostess Iced Pumpkin CupCakes are going to be made with a pumpkin flavored cake and it will be iced with cream and orange colored icing. It’s filling will remain the signature crème filling. Now, as for the maple treat, we have the Hostess Maple Glazed Donuts. It’s the same signature donuts that we already know with a sweet maple glaze for a distinct, but subtle fall twist. Let’s hope the maple for the donuts doesn’t put us in another Krispy Kreme fiasco. These treats are launching in August and have already been spotted in stores.
Spooky Snacks
The Halloween flavors being launched sound equally on-theme and interesting. The flavors themselves might not be incredibly unique, but the colors are all right on point. The ScaryCakes are a play on the Hostess CupCakes, using a tender chocolate cake filled with the signature crème filling and topped with orange icing with white squiggles.
Interestingly, Hostess decided to release a second CupCake flavor for Halloween, with these being called FrankenCakes. The soft yellow cake is filled with the signature crème filling, and it is topped with green icing and white squiggles. The glazing on it does feel distinctly reminiscent of the classic Halloween character and I appreciate the fact that the release of a second cupcake flavor uses a different cake base.
Finally in the Halloween product lineup is their Spooky Twinkies. For these, they’re just chocolate Twinkies with the original crème filling. They are by far the least interesting, but black-and-white sure are colors we associate with the Halloween season. And the single serve package packages are decorated with cobwebs to really up the Halloween spirit. Luckily, Hostess isn’t jumping the gun too much with releasing their Halloween selection, as it won’t be available and in stores until September.
