Five Criminally Underrated Lidl Products

If you’ve never heard of Aldi or Lidl, Reddit is the place to get to know them. Granted, the Aldi Reddit community is more vocal, also a bit bigger (by a couple hundred thousand). But the Lidl Reddit community is as passionate about that store’s products.

Getting to know Lidl isn’t just about getting tips on high quality (insanely affordable) European baked goods (pretzel buns and pain au chocolat anyone?). Kinda like r/Aldi, r/Lidl discusses the best products you can find in the store. Intrigued by what are basically grocery store fightin’ words, we decided to examine five of those criminally underrated Lidl foods. 

Lidl Preferred Selection Salted Irish Butter – $3.69

You’ll hear a lot about the Kerrygold knock-off of the black box butter―if you listen to Lidl product talk, that is. But it’s a good subject to eavesdrop in on, since good butter is the pillar of any delicious meal. Lots of users have good things to say about it, with one reviewer even saying, “No other butter compares. I love baking with it and having it straight on warm bread.” Another Redditor says they’ll even take Lidl over Kerrygold when the price is right.

Eridanous Smoked Solid Light Tuna – $2.99

Yep, this is a less than specific and less than “sexy” food, but a couple things: tinned/canned/otherwise preserved fish is already pretty criminally underrated. But since Europe tends to do all the canning and preserving of delicious tasty oily fish much, much better than we do (with certain exceptions, of course), it’s no shock there’s a lot of love for Lidl’s little array of smoky, oily, tinned fishies out there.  

Nonfat (or Full Fat) Greek Yogurt – $3.25 

Nonfat or full fat, plain or any flavor, most r/lidl and just Reddit yogurt enthusiasts (under any subreddit) have nothing but good things to say about Lidl’s own Greek yogurt brand, which comes in criminally affordable at $3.25 for 32 ounces (about half as much as you’ll pay for, say, Fage). It’s listed among Lidl store brand foods that taste better than the branded version, and except for very mild complaints about some runniness, you’ll find most users saying stuff like “I like their Greek yogurt more than other brands.) 

Gelatelli Bars by Lidl – $7.89

One of the’s approximately 80% private brands, Gelatelli doesn’t just do ice cream bars―you can get dessert cones, frozen fruit bars, ice cream, etc. But these ice cream bars (the Mix Classic box in particular) are praised all over the internet map for being able to dupe those delicious Magnum chocolate covered ice cream bars for a lot less money. In the Mix Classic box―still under $8 for 8 bars―you get milk, white chocolate, dark chocolate, and almond chocolate coating. As one Reddit user put it, and a lot of Redditors agree, “Their Gelatelli Magnum dupes far surpass Magnum, both in the chocolate and the ice cream.”
