Dubai chocolate is yesterday’s news. Now, frozen gummy candy has captured the eyes and stomachs of social media users. If the TikToks about the DIY candy haven’t reached your algorithm yet, here’s an explainer of what it is and why so many are into making it.
What exactly is this frozen gummy candy trend?
The icy treat is called jelly eolmeok, aka the nostalgic chewy, colorful jelly rolls that you’d find in a candy store, but frozen. The trend originated in South Korea, but it’s made its way globally through TikTok.
How do you make it?
To make it, you fill a glass container with candy— it doesn’t have to be jelly rolls, it can be any gummy — and you freeze it for between three and five hours. The result is an extra-crunchy and chewy candy. For slightly softer, more flavorful results, some content creators suggest soaking the candy in soda overnight before freezing it.
Is frozen gummy candy any good?
Honestly, it depends on your preferences and how you make it. Freezing gummies doesn’t enhance the flavor of the candy; instead, it makes it harder to chew. If jaw pain is your thing, go for it! But I’ll personally be passing on it. TikToker Cindy Thi made a video where she made the jelly eolmeok and said the results were “horrifying.” After only two hours in the freezer, they were “so hard.” She couldn’t even chew them with her mouth closed, saying she was “trying to protect my jaw.”
However, other content creators like O Haru had a positive experience making the frozen jelly, likening it to a “sweet slushie.” She advised that while making it, you should add “LOTS of jelly,” but Swedish gummy candy is “a no-go.” Instead, she recommended using Haribo or Trolli Worms. O Haru also advised to instead of simply freezing the candy, bathing it in soda for 12 hours, and then keeping it in the freezer for another 12 hours.
Why are people so obsessed with frozen gummy candy on TikTok?
Regardless of whether the frozen jellies are good or not, the main appeal on TikTok seems to be the ASMR quality the candy has when tapped on with nails, bitten into, or broken apart, because they’re so hard. So even if they aren’t easy to eat, they’re fun to make videos of. It also helps that they’re colorful. Have you tried the trend? Let us know what you’re freezing in the comments.
