There are, in a sense, two protein crises happening. Crisis one is that food companies are seemingly unable to stop putting it in their food, and the collective frenzy we’ve all been experiencing to boost our protein levels shows no sign of stopping. Crisis two is fed by crisis one: Because of our never-ending pursuit of protein, whey protein has never been more expensive – and while there are a bunch of protein alternatives out there, nothing’s dethroned the champion just yet.

Could goat whey do it? My money’s on…maaaybe not. But it’s nice to have options, huh?

Z Natural Foods Goat Whey Protein

Yesterday, Z Natural Foods, a food company focused on organic superfoods and fruit powders, announced its Chocolate Goat Whey Protein Concentrate. In its press release, Z Natural Foods stated that the concentrate combines “three powerhouse ingredients in this premium blend:” goat whey protein, organic dark chocolate made with real cacao, and medium-chain triglycerides. According to the company, its goat whey protein contains high levels of A2 beta-casein, which is easier to digest for a lot of people than the A1 beta-casein present in cow milk whey protein.

It should be noted that its nutritional profile is pretty different from that of leading whey proteins. Z Natural Foods Goat Whey Protein has 11 grams of protein per 20-gram serving, and more fat and less calcium than the whey powders made by the likes of Optimum Nutrition (which contain 24 grams of protein per 31-gram serving). It’s also slightly more expensive price-wise than the latter, although you can currently grab a 1-pound bag of Goat Whey Protein for $27.99.

But…What Does It Taste Like?

Well, so far, there aren’t any reviews of Z Natural Foods’ chocolate whey – BUT there are reviews of its unflavored one, and people are big fans. Over on Amazon, the product has an impressive rating, a lot of five-star reviews, and plenty of customers praise its taste.

That said, those same people do point out that it does have a gamey flavor – and that’s kind of inescapable when it comes to goat milk. It will taste different from cow’s milk whey, and that’s sort of inescapable…so if you don’t like the taste of goat milk, you probably won’t like this very much. That said, we’ve been seeing a bit of an uptick in the popularity of goat products in the US market recently (earlier this year, Costco started stocking goat meat more widely), and this protein feels like the next step in that push.
