Bacon is one of life’s great pleasures. What’s not to love? Well, I’ll tell you what. The packaging.

Sometimes you only want a couple of slices. Maybe you’re making breakfast for one, or you need a little bacon for a sandwich. But the moment you open that package, you’ve got the rest of it sitting in your fridge, waiting to be used.
And now you’ve got to figure out what to do with it before it goes bad.
Well, Hormel has come up with a rather simple solution: smaller, pre-portioned sections of bacon.
The company has introduced Hormel Black Label Portion Pack Bacon, which lets you open only the amount you need without opening the entire package. It makes so much sense. I’m a little annoyed that I never thought of this myself.
How Does Hormel’s New Bacon Packaging Work?
The new Hormel Black Label Portion Pack Bacon comes with 12 slices divided into three separate sections, each containing four slices. The sections are connected by perforations, so you can tear off one four-slice portion, open it, and leave the other two unopened until you’re ready for them.
That’s it. No complicated new bacon technology. No special equipment. Just a package that recognizes you might not want to cook 12 slices of bacon at once.
The bacon itself hasn’t changed, either. It’s the same Hormel Black Label Original Bacon, only packaged in a way that’s a little more convenient for people who aren’t cooking for an entire household. And while the new format is particularly handy for people living alone, I can see it being useful for couples and smaller households, too.
Imagine you’re making a couple of bacon, egg, and cheese sandwiches on a Saturday morning. Four slices? Perfect. Or maybe you’re making a pasta dish that calls for a little chopped bacon, but not enough to justify opening an entire package.
Instead of trying to wrestle the remaining slices back into their packaging and hoping you’ve wrapped them tightly enough, you can leave the other portions alone.
It’s a small change, but that’s kind of the point. Sometimes the most useful food innovations aren’t new flavors or elaborate creations. They’re things that make everyday cooking slightly less annoying.
Where Can You Buy Hormel’s Portion Pack Bacon?
Hormel Black Label Portion Pack Bacon is available now at select Walmart, Meijer, and Albertsons locations.
The new bacon comes in a 12-ounce package with a suggested retail price of $5.97 to $6.97, depending on the retailer.
If you’re wondering whether the smaller portions mean you’re getting less bacon, you’re still getting 12 slices in total. The difference is that you don’t have to open all 12 at once.
Of course, there’s always the option of freezing leftover bacon from a regular package. And if you’re someone who goes through bacon at an impressive rate, this probably isn’t going to change your life. But for anyone who’s ever opened a package for two slices and then spent the next few days trying to find excuses to use the rest, I can see the appeal.
Now, if someone could come up with packaging that stops me from eating all the bacon I’ve cooked before it makes it onto the plate, that would be a real breakthrough.
