It’s finally here. After months of teasing, the Japanese 7-Eleven egg salad sandwich is now available. Well, okay, it’s not the exact same viral egg salad sandwich you can get at Japanese 7-Elevens. It’s inspired by that sandwich. What does that mean and how can you score one for yourself? We’ve got the deets.
What is the Japanese 7-Eleven egg salad sandwich and why is everyone freaking out?
The Japanese 7-Eleven egg salad sandwich (aka tamago sando) isn’t complex. It’s made with milk bread (crusts cut off) and a simple mix of chopped hard-boiled eggs (with a few extra yolks thrown in) and Kewpie mayo (a yolk-only Japanese mayo that we think is one of the best mayonnaise brands around).
But this egg salad sandwich has a cult following. You’ll see it as a must-try right up there with some of the top sushi and ramen spots in tourist guides. Even Anthony Bourdain sung its praises, describing the sandwiches as “pillows of love.” So, us Americans being able to experience this iconic sandwich without having to fly 16 hours is a pretty big deal.
How is the U.S. version of the 7-Eleven egg salad sandwich different?
As noted in the press release, the American tamago sando is not a one-to-one facsimile. It’s simply “inspired by” the Japanese sandwich. What’s the difference? Well, as many fans were quick to point out, our version of the sandwich is not crust-less. Another definitive difference is the pricepoint. A tamago sando in Japan runs about $1.50 while the U.S. version is over $5. And, per one Redditor, it’s smaller.
Nitpicking aside, initial reviews are generally pretty positive. Our buddy SnachWithZach tried one and said it was “actually really good,” and that he “would come back for [it].” Stay tuned for Sporked’s official review.
Where can you buy this sandwich?
If you want to taste the American tamago sando for yourself, you can find it at 7-Elevens nationwide, as well as participating Speedway and Stripes locations. Already tasted it? Let us know what you think of it in the comments!
