Are the New Jolly Rancher Halloween Gummies a Trick or a Treat?

It’s the end of August, and you know what that means: Halloween! Yep. It’s Halloween now. Deal with it. Jolly Rancher is celebrating the holiday with a tricksy twist—they’ve spookified their gummies and given each flavor a “disguse.” In other words, the colors don’t match the flavors. The whole point of these new Jolly Rancher “Trickies” is to reach into the bag without knowing what flavor you’re about to get. 

Fun fact about me that no one asked for: Jolly Rancher hard candy is my all-time favorite candy. Nothing lights up my taste buds like a cherry Jolly Rancher in all its sour, fruity, ruby-red glory. But, uh, full transparency: I haven’t tried Jolly Rancher’s regular variety of gummies before. So this is really a new experience for me all around. 

Before we start, I have to say: I felt like a real journalist here. I separated each color and took little bites out of every gummy to confirm my initial suspicion: The flavors might not match their original colors, but each color is a specific “mystery” flavor. For example, all of the bright red gummies are watermelon. The lime green is cherry. Sorry if that ruins the fun, but the world deserves to know the truth. Anyway, onto the review!

Pros: I was really put off by the strangely soft gummy texture of these at first, but they actually grew on me. It’s different—almost a little melty, the way the gummy stretches and pulls apart between your teeth. (I can’t say if the texture is different from Jolly Rancher’s regular gummies, but that’s my two cents.) The flavors do taste like their respective Jolly Rancher hard candies, just a little more muted, which I think works pretty well for the gummy medium. 

Cons: I was kinda hoping for a Bertie’s Bott’s Every Flavor Beans situation here, where no matter what color of gummy you pull out, you can’t guess the flavor. And I think the shapes could be spookier; they just look like fruits with faces. Also, the pink gummies taste the way felt-tip permanent markers smell when you pop off the cap. It’s super astringent and strange. Green, blue, and purple are yummy—bright red (watermelon, blech) and pink (permanent marker) can be tossed, if you ask me. 

Verdict: These new Jolly Rancher gummies are fun, but I think the concept is a little lacking. I’d rather find classic Jolly Rancher hard candies in my candy bowl, to be honest.
