It’s been a minute since we checked in with Kemps – so let’s do just that. This Minnesotan dairy brand started life way back in 1914, and in the 120+ years that it’s been churning out ice creams (quite literally), it’s gotten through a fair few flavors. Not just of desserts, either: Last year, it dropped an orange milk, just in time for Halloween. It’s safe to say that Kemps is a fan of taking a couple of risks here and there, and we love to see it.

Its latest flavor, though, feels like a certain winner – especially if you’re from the Midwest. Puppy Chow Ice Cream is on its way. Here’s what we know.

Kemps Puppy Chow Ice Cream

We first learned of Kemps’ new Puppy Chow Ice Cream via @candyhunting, who revealed about a week back that the brand was launching it in stores pretty soon. For the uninitiated, puppy chow (also known as muddy buddies, muddy munch, reindeer chow, and several other names) is a primarily Midwestern snack consisting of cereal (usually Chex or Crispix), peanut butter, melted chocolate, and powdered sugar.

Kemps’ new ice cream takes the flavor and texture combo that puppy chow delivers, and runs with it. In each carton, you get a chocolate peanut butter ice cream with chocolate-covered rice cereal mix-ins, finished with a powdered sugar swirl. How that swirl will work in practice is slightly baffling me – is it just gonna be a big seam of powder? – but this sounds good. Sweet, but good.

And The People Agree!

It feels like Kemps has tapped into something clever with this ice cream flavor – and if it captures puppy chow properly, it could be a hit. Customers are definitely excited, too. When @candyhunting revealed that Kemps Puppy Chow Ice Cream was nearing release, the comment section responded with nothing short of joy. “And all the entire Midwest goes crazy – I will absolutely be looking for this!” said one person, with another saying, “This is gonna be amazing.”

Another, very conscientiously, pointed out that this flavor’s at risk of being confused with actual dog ice cream. Needless to say, keep it well away from your pups. As Kemps is a Midwestern-focused brand, this may not be readily available everywhere in the US, but if you’re in an area where it’s stocked, it might be worth trying it out. It’ll only be available for a limited time once it drops.
