Magic Spoon granola is everything granola isn’t: It’s low sugar, keto friendly, and totally grain free. But is it anything granola is? Expectations are important here. If you’re familiar with Magic Spoon cereal, you know the drill. Magic Spoon cereal is definitely cereal-adjacent, even though it’s made with milk protein instead of wheat or rice and allulose and monk fruit extract instead of sugar. It’s sweet and crunchy, and if you close your eyes and hold your nose, you can definitely convince yourself that a bowl of Magic Spoon tastes just as good as a bowl of Froot Loops, even though that isn’t true. For people on a diet, it gets the job done.
But wait—what is grain free granola made of if it isn’t made of grains? Magic Spoon granola is mostly clusters of what appears to be pulverized Magic Spoon cereal, milk protein crisps, and nuts—peanuts, cashews, and sunflower seeds, mostly. It doesn’t have the aggressive crunch that most granola has but it definitely nods at granola. We taste tested the three new flavors of Magic Spoon grain free granola, and found the one that’s worth buying.
Pros: Magic Spoon Mixed Berry granola contains actual freeze dried fruit—strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. If you like the tang of freeze-dried berries, you just might like this. Also, all of these granolas contain 14g of protein per serving. If you’re on a high-protein diet, consider that a pro across the board.
Cons: This was my least favorite of the flavors because despite the real fruit in the mix, this grain free granola tastes the most like alternative sweeteners. The allulose really settles on your tongue and lingers as you eat.
Pros: On first bite, this Magic Spoon granola flavor is really good. The honey almond flavor is reminiscent of Nature Valley granola bars—nice and roasty and breakfast-y.
Cons: As you keep eating, there’s a bitterness that emerges. It’s almost like the flavor of the nuts clashes with the milk protein and other Magic Spoon ingredients. It’s almost good, but the lingering aftertaste turned me off.
Pros: Of all the Magic Spoon granola, the peanut butter flavor works the best. The peanut flavor is mild and pleasant, but it’s aggressive enough to mask the alternative sweetener aftertaste. This will be nice sprinkled atop a bowl of vanilla yogurt.
Cons: This has the same cons as the rest of the Magic Spoon grain free granola varieties we tasted. The crunch is a little chewy because of the milk protein. And there is still an aftertaste from the sweetener. That said, if you’re on a keto diet, cutting your sugar intake, or want a high-protein option, this is the Magic Spoon granola flavor to buy.
Howdy! I’m Gwynedd, Sporked’s managing editor. I live in Los Angeles and have access to the best tacos the U.S. has to offer—but I’m a sucker for a crunchy Old El Paso taco night every now and then. I’ve been at Sporked since 2022 and I’m still searching frozen mozzarella sticks that can hold a candle to restaurant sticks.
Why you should trust me: I’ve been a journalist for 20 years (yikes), a consumer of food for 40-plus years, and I’m truly hard pressed to think of foods I don’t like (or that I can’t tolerate at the very least). Oh and one time I cooked my way through Guy Fieri’s cookbook and wrote about the journey through Flavortown.
What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s Original Savory Thins. Fat free plain yogurt (usually Fage or Nancy’s). Honeycrisp apples. Sweet cream coffee creamer for my at-home Americanos. A frozen cauliflower crust pizza and some jarred mushrooms to top it with. Old El Paso Stand ‘N Stuff taco shells and Gardein Ground Be’f, even though I think “be’f” is a nightmarish contraction.
Favorite ranking: Stouffer’s frozen dinners. I don’t own a microwave (I get my cancers the old fashioned way!), so I love taste testing things that I don’t really buy to eat at home.
Least favorite ranking: Soy sauce. Don’t get me wrong, I love soy sauce—but consuming that much sodium in one sitting is probably illegal in some countries. Our frozen enchilada taste test was a close second; the smell of microwaved corn tortillas still haunts me.
