New Funyuns Review! We Tried Ramen-Flavored Funyuns

As we have established several times, 2024 has been the “Year of the Chip” thanks to Frito-Lay, who has been delivering incredible snacks one after another. The most recent was my most anticipated Frito-Lay release of the year: a collaboration between Maruchan and Funyuns officially named Funyuns Maruchan Hot & Spicy Chicken Ramen Flavored Onion Rings.

Maruchan has been in the game since 1953 and offers a wide variety of extremely affordable fantastic flavors of Ramen Noodles. Chances are, if you go to your local store and head to the ramen aisle, you will see a big selection of Maruchan.

Funyuns has been around since 1969, and while they haven’t introduced a ton of flavors, they have released some heavy hitters over the years, including Flamin’ Hot, Spicy Queso, and the soon to return Steakhouse Onion.

The question is: What happens when these brands join forces? And can you use the Funyuns instead of a seasoning packet over your ramen? (Spoiler: Not really. I tried.) Funyuns sent over a bag of the new Funyuns flavor to find out. Here’s the full review.

New Funyuns Flavor!

Funyuns Maruchan Hot & Spicy Chicken Ramen Flavored Onion Rings

Pros: These taste exactly like ramen-flavored Funyuns. Just as they promise. The flavor of the Hot & Spicy Chicken seasoning works incredibly well with the texture of the Funyuns. You even ever so slightly get a slight hint of the noodles themselves. The heat on these new Funyuns is very pleasant, too—it isn’t overpowering at all and slowly builds as you eat the rings. I’m happy to report that this collaboration works really well and I’d love to see more Maruchan x Funyuns.

Cons: The seasoning is definitely a tad inconsistent. Occasionally I’d get several rings in a row that hardly had any seasoning on them at all and then get one that was SUPER coated. Additionally, if you’re seeking out Flamin’ Hot levels of spicy chips you MAY find this to be a little bit underwhelming. Oh, and this does not work as a replacement for seasoning packets in your Ramen. Trust me.
