Here’s how you can make your own!

There are few hairstyles quite as iconic—and mocked—as the mullet. And I can say that, as I used to have one as a teenager, and yes… it still haunts my dreams.

Also haunting my dreams is the McMullet, a short-lived burger from McDonald’s New Zealand, which has already disappeared from the menu, but is gaining notoriety online. Here’s what you need to know to make your own.

What is the McMullet?

It was a short-lived burger served at New Zealand McDonald’s that featured an extra slice of of cheese hanging off the back like a long fall of glorious hair.

The idea apparently came from Instagram user MaketheMcMullet, who worked to spread the idea of a burger with a glorious slice of cheese mullet online. It gained enough traction that McDonald’s outlets in New Zealand added it to their menu in April. Per a press release, there was even a McMullet event at which there was a mullet contest. The winner earned a year’s worth of McDonald’s hamburgers and 12 months of free mullet haircuts.

Sadly, the McMulllet has already left stores and there are no apparent plans to bring it back any time soon.

How can I make my own?

The great thing about the McMullet is that you can make without requiring any special orders or extra effort. All you have to do is order a cheeseburger with a extra slice of cheese and just dangle it in the back. That’s it!

Now, the big question is whether you eat it from the front or the back? Personally, I’d go with the front, just to keep that mullet-y cheese hanging a little longer. After all, if the party’s in the back, why not keep that party going as long as possible?
