McDonald’s has irritated its customers plenty of times before, and to be honest, it’s all but inevitable that it’ll do so again – and a new move concerning its sauces is currently riling up its patrons one more time. In the last couple of months, we’ve discussed McDonald’s’ plans to use AI automation in its drive-thru and its ending of BOGO deals, both of which have caused a fair bit of ire. Now, its new sauce rules are doing the same thing.

Spoiler alert: People are now getting fewer of them per order, and if you want more, you may well have to pay. Here’s the lowdown.

Unlimited Sauces? Not on Their Watch

McDonald’s’ new sauce rules, whereby you get one dipping sauce per six nuggets (or six sauces per forty nuggets, although this seems to currently vary by location), have been in place at some McDonald’s locations for a while. At those locations, if you want additional sauces, you have to pay for them, tub by tub. Given that, for some people, the whole point of getting chicken nuggets is to drench them in sauce, this news has not been the most welcome.

Now, though, it seems as though this rule is spreading further around the country to more and more locations, which appears to potentially be the next step to it being an official policy, as opposed to a store-by-store or franchise-by-franchise one. Last month, a diner posted a picture of their local McDonald’s drive-thru on Reddit, with a picture of a “Sauce Policy” card outlining how many sauces each diner could get with their nuggets. In that one, 20 nuggets got you four sauces, but four- and six-piece orders? Just the one, guys.

Tell Us How You Really Feel…

As expected, some people are not best pleased about this move. “Seems kinda strict, ppl could easily use 2 sauces for a 4-6 piece,” said one person in the above Reddit post. Another person pointed out that this policy has been around in various forms for a while now, but that there’s a cyclical nature to it: Every now and again, McDonald’s locations will cap sauces in response to over-use before removing said cap, leaving the sauce free-flowing once more. The difference now, though, is that this policy seems to be creeping across the country—and living as we are in a time of ever-tightening pursestrings and shrinkflation, we wouldn’t be surprised if this were commonplace everywhere soon.

Still, some have said that this is actually an upgrade to what they’d currently get, pointing out that they normally get three sauces per 20-pack of nuggets. So, could this new policy be an improvement? That depends on where you normally dine, to be honest. If you’re worried, though, we recommend buying your own sauce for your McNuggets—just bring the bottle from home, guys.
