Have you ever felt the call of the great outdoors urging you to quit your job and disappear deep into the Montana wilderness, living out the days by hunting, gathering, and being entirely removed from civilization? Do you feel an inexplicable urge to become one with the land whenever you hear “Rocky Mountain High”? You may just be in luck, as soda giant Mtn Dew just announced it’s offering up free money and free Mtn Dew to certain people looking for a change of scenery.
Did you say free Mtn Dew? Wait, sorry, more importantly, did you say FREE MONEY? How does it work?
Mtn Dew always has a lot going on. They recently announced the permanent return of Game Fuel come November, as well as the imminent release of the sixth incarnation of their annual mystery-flavored soda, VooDEW, but this may be their grabbiest announcement for people who aren’t diehard Dew freaks. This week, the iconic soda brand launched a campaign allowing Dewers to pre-register on their website to receive a free 20-ounce Mtn Dew simply for crossing into the Mountain Time Zone (which they apparently verify using geolocation). All flavors are up for grabs in this promotion, and Dewers have until December 31 to register.
It’s worth noting that while Mtn Dew may be encouraging visits to the Mountain Time Zone, current residents have to jump through some hoops. “This is BS,” one commenter said in response to the brand’s YouTube video announcement. “I try to sign up for the deal because I [live in the Mountain Time Zone,] but the webpage is saying I have to LEAVE the time zone, register, then come BACK INTO the time zone to [receive] the deal.” Sorry, Coloradans!
But that’s just one part of this promotion. Additionally, five lucky winners who are making their trip to the Mountain Time Zone permanent can enter to be reimbursed for the cost of their move, and along with cash, they also get free Mtn Dew for a year, as well as some outdoor gear so they can really live that mountain lifestyle. The brand is offering up to $10,000 for each winner of the contest provided they share their motivations for moving to Mountain Time and how they plan to enjoy the great outdoors once they get there in a TikTok video with #MountainDewHauls and #Contest in the caption.
To help spread the word about the initiative, Mtn Dew introduced a new character, “the Mountain Dude,” as the face of the campaign. Though the only phrases in the Mountain Dude’s vocabulary seem to be “Dew” and “No Dew,” the character gets the point about free Mtn Dew across rather effectively as he hops from time zone to time zone in a YouTube vid.
Why is any of this happening? Well, so you’ll pay attention to Mtn Dew, obviously, but also because “people who live in the Mountain Time Zone are +6% more cheerful than the typical American,” according to an official press release. We’ll have to wait and see if any hopeful Dewers agree, but it’s safe to say that a year’s supply of Mtn Dew and a free move is sure to sweeten the deal.
