Everyone’s Talking About Aldi’s New Gelato

Imagine showing a Victorian child the products that show up in modern supermarkets. Honestly, we live in an age where food mashups are de rigueur, where food companies have to continue evolving their product lines, lest they die in the face of competition. If you think that I’m taking a bleak stance with this, I’m really not: Yeah, some new items and food collabs are utterly wild, but more often than not, the push for innovation results in products and flavors that people are pretty happy exist.

Such is the case with Aldi’s new gelato, which rides the wave of a very modern flavor – and which its customers are big fans of. Let’s discuss.

Happy Birthday To You

The flavor in question is…birthday cake! Aldi’s new Birthday Cake Gelato has quietly started being spotted by shoppers in its stores (Aldi never really publicizes the release of its new private-label products – nor does any supermarket, really, and that kind of adds to the fun of discovering they exist). Birthday cake flavor is obviously not brand-new, but it’s had an extended moment in the first half of the 2020s, with the likes of Drumstick dropping their own birthday cake-flavored options recently. Now, it’s Aldi’s turn. 

Sold under Aldi’s Sundae Shoppe line, thus far, this flavor feels like a bit of a rare find. It’s not currently listed on the Aldi website, which implies that either A) the good folks over at Aldi HQ haven’t gotten around to listing it, or B) that it’s going to be a flash-in-the-pan affair and won’t be around very long. If you’re interested in trying it, we’d assume that B is the case; don’t take any chances. The lack of listing also means we can’t tell you exactly how much it costs, but similar products in the Sundae Shoppe range are priced at $3.79 to $4.19 — so we’d expect this one to be somewhere in or around that range.

And You Said People Are Big Fans Of It…

I did. And they are! On Reddit, a customer who tried the birthday cake ice cream referred to it as their “new obsession.” Hey, if that’s not a testament to its flavor… “Whoever recommended this, I hate/ love you at the same time. This is sooo good,” they went on to state. Over on Facebook, in the Aisle of Shame Community group (which is a very handy resource if you ever want to check out the new items the store’s stocking, just FYI), there was a similar response. “Oh my! So delicious!  Even put it in a waffle cone. Highly recommend!”
