Burger King is clearly in the mood for a revamp. So far this year, the fast food chain has not just been going big on its returning and new menu items – its apple pie coming back and its new Peppercorn BLT Whopper have been two of its standout moves in recent weeks – but it’s also taking a close look at its classics. BK recently announced that it’d be revising its Whopper to improve its bun and mayo. The results? Well, according to our taste test, they were pretty good

Now, it looks as though it’s doing a similar thing with its onion rings. Canadian customers have reported that the rings in their restaurants have changed…but unlike the new Whopper, this move may not have been for the better. Here’s the deal.

What Has Burger King Done To Its Onion Rings?

Over on Reddit, Canadian Burger King fans have been giving us the lowdown on its new recipe. BK’s new onion rings get rid of the minced onion and the ridged, bumpy breading, and instead have a smoother, sleeker appearance – and, importantly, contain an actual full ring of onion inside. One person compared them to the onion rings from the Canadian chain Harvey’s, while others said that they looked as though they compared to Whataburger’s rings, which have a smoother appearance.

Although Burger King hasn’t said much about these new onion rings, it all seems to align with the mission it set out to achieve when it rejigged its Whopper to give customers an elevated, fresher experience with its food. By getting rid of the mince and embracing the slice, these rings might just feel a bit more, well, real.

When Will the U.S. Get Them?

There’s no word on that just yet, sadly. It may well be that these new onion rings are a Canada-exclusive move for a while, so that Burger King can gauge whether people like them. Alternatively, they may arrive next week. Who knows with these fast food chains?

And…Are They Any Good?

Here’s where it gets tricky. Although we admire Burger King’s desire to reduce the processing of their dishes, several people who have tried these new onion rings so far have said that they prefer the older, minced variety. “They aren’t much better than before and you get less,” said one customer on Reddit. Another person simply said that the new ones “suck,” and many lamented the fact that Burger King would change one of their favorite menu items, especially when they can just buy grocery store onion rings for a lower price.

That said, there are a few folks out there who see this move as a good thing. One person on Reddit stated that the current onion rings are “heinous,” and clearly, the move to an actual, real ring of onion is going to be embraced in certain corners. Whether this’ll be a hit for BK or not remains to be seen – maybe it’s run before it could walk with this one.
