There’s a new canned tuna on the market. Can you believe that’s news? Well, it is, because it’s not just any new canned tuna—it’s new Fishwife canned tuna. It’s new canned tuna made by the company that can probably be credited with popularizing fancy tinned fish across the country. And this new canned tuna sounds good as hell: Albacore Tuna with Soy and Ginger.
Recently, Fishwife has been expanding like crazy, with placements in Costco and Aldi. So I was honestly a little afraid that the brand could be spreading itself too thin and, perhaps, they had gotten lax about quality control. But I needn’t have worried. Because, spoiler alert, this new Fishwife fish is pretty good! I do have a few notes, though. Here’s my full review.
Pros: This new, hand-packed canned tuna is flavored with gluten-free soy sauce, fresh ginger, dashi, leek, mirin, and garlic. It’s not just soy sauce on tuna—nor does it taste like it. There’s a pleasant soy flavor layered with some gentle ginger. Even though the packaging specifies that the ginger is fresh, it doesn’t come across super spicy. Instead, there’s just enough ginger flavor to offset that fishiness that canned tuna has. I ate the whole can with a fork and was super satisfied. So it would be at home on a board. But you could also use it in a rice bowl with some cubed avocado and sliced scallions, or mix it into a nouveau tuna salad with Kewpie mayo and maybe some sriracha.
Cons: Sesame oil is listed in the ingredients, but I think there could be more. Or, at the very least, more of some sort of oil. I think that would make this feel a bit more indulgent and luxe. I also wish the ginger was more pronounced. I want some of that fresh ginger heat. Verdict: This is a great new addition to Fishwife’s tinned seafood line-up and I’ll be purchasing it again—I just might add a glug or two of good olive oil to give it that silky quality I personally love in a fancy can of fish.
Hi! I’m the editor-in-chief of Sporked. I will never turn down a fresh-shucked oyster but I’ll also leap at whatever new product Reese’s releases and I love a Tostitos Hint of Lime, even if there is no actual lime in the ingredients.
Why you should trust me: I have been writing about food and beverages for well over a decade and am an avid at-home cook and snacker. I began my career writing about fine dining and recipes, moved into cocktails and spirits, and now I talk about groceries. If you can eat it or drink it, I’ve probably written about it.
What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s dried okra. Appleton Farms prosciutto from Aldi. Some sort of Trader Joe’s cheese (I’m into the aged gouda at the moment). Frozen waffles (usually the Eggo Cinnamon Toast Minis). Spindrift water (loving the Cosmopolitan right now).
Favorite ranking: Smoked salmon. Imagine me as Scrooge McDuck but instead of coins I’m diving into a vault of slippery smoked salmon slices. Pure joy. I also found some real steals in that taste test!
Least favorite ranking: Canned oysters. I had such high hopes for this but it quickly became a chore. The kitchen smelled like an uncleaned aquarium.
