Hostess Teases New Spring Snack Cakes and Treats

“Holiday creep” is no longer specific to Christmas trees in August or that guy standing around the office punch bowl that, wait, we thought you invited…Springtime has companies like Hostess champing at the bit to roll out warmer-weather specials.

The iconic snack cake brand scoffed at Punxsutawney Phil’s “6-more-week” prediction, rolled their eyes at his unaccredited meteorology degree, and went ahead teasing some limited edition drops to celebrate spring, the mix of new and returning seasonal products to include Donettes, coffee cakes, and cupcakes.

(NEW) Donettes – Churro Mini Donuts

They’re described as a “soft cake donut topped with cinnamon sugar,” which looks from the picture like a crunchy outer coating instead of a simple dusting. They’re already listed on the Hostess website but seemingly not available to buy anywhere so, naturally, we’ll just be refreshing the page until further notice. How we use our personal days is our decision, okay HR?

(NEW) Hostess Coffee Cakes – Lemon Blueberry

The Hostess crowd favorite coffee cake gets a spring update with the bright, zippy flavors of lemon and blueberry. These are new this year so there’s no existing feedback, but we’ve known very few things that are made worse by adding lemon blueberry.

(NEW) Peeps x Hostess CupCakes

If you haven’t gotten enough Peeps in your life, you’ve clearly never walked down any CVS aisle. We’ve never known overstimulation like the assortment of Peep flavors staring out at us from the shelves. Peep trauma aside, this Hostess CupCake actually seems like a very palatable way to enjoy the beady-eyed treats. The golden cake is paired with marshmallow filling and icing.

(RETURNING) Donettes – Carrot Cake Mini Donuts

With a pretty solid rating of 4.2 out of 5 on Walmart’s website, it was probably a no-brainer to bring these crowd favorites back. “But 4.2/5 is 8.4/10, which is 84%, which isn’t that good.” Okay, nerd. A B is a great grade, especially when accounting for the “haters on the internet” curve. These snackable donuts are spice cake with a crunchy coating, and are on the front line helping us forgive springtime for allergies.

(RETURNING) Hostess CupCakes – Key Lime

This returning item has mixed reviews, ranging from fans who eagerly await the revival, to the scorned who found a lack of key lime flavor, to a healthy dose of patrons who seem to think that commenting on the Walmart product page is a direct line to Hostess’s product development or customer service team. The product is listed as a golden cake with key lime flavored filling, but honestly, even if they do miss on the frosting, there are a lot worse things than a plain Hostess cake. If nothing else, green frosting is a springtime makeover that practically conjures the sound of birds chirping and smell of flowers blooming.

There’s no word yet on when/exactly where these’ll be available, but we suspect very little wasted time between clearing the Valentine’s treats and making room for spring’s. So, hurry and get your heart-shaped Ding Dongs, you human-shaped Ding Dong!
