If there’s one thing that Trader Joe’s is known for, it’s getting rid of fan-favorite products at just the wrong moment. Trader Joe’s giveth and Trader Joe’s taketh away. The latest victim in the Trader Joe’s endless cycle of releasing, discontinuing, and re-releasing? Trader Joe’s Chicken Chile Verde Burritos. They disappeared from the frozen aisle early last year, much to the disappointment of people who loved them (including us!). Now they’re back—but are they better than ever?

They still come in a pack of two, but they’re now individually wrapped, so you can open the box and eat just one without exposing the other one to whatever funk lives in your freezer. So that’s nice! Unfortunately, our praise pretty much ends there. As a reminder, we liked these burritos before they were discontinued and re-released because the filling was “zesty, bright, salty, meaty, and just downright great.” We weren’t as impressed by the new version.

Trader Joe’s Chicken Chile Verde Burritos

Pros: These are still frozen burritos and frozen burritos still make a quick, filling lunch in a pinch. I chose to heat these up two ways—one in the microwave and one in the air fryer. The air fried version took ten times as long to cook as the microwaved burrito and it still came out cold in the middle. So please just save yourself the time and trouble and nuke these puppies for a speedier meal.

Cons: These are incredibly boring. The filling is very gloopy—much gloopier than it used to be. The chicken is stringy. And the bright salsa verde flavor we used to love now tastes dull, almost like the sauce came from a can. Reminder: When we tasted these in the past, my colleague Jordan Myrick wrote, “I could and would happily eat one of these a day for the rest of my life and not get tired of them.” I just can’t imagine that being the case anymore.
