Our #1 Jeni’s Ice Cream Flavor Is Finally Back

Folks, as Sporked’s most tenured ice cream taste-tester, I have tried dozens of different Jeni’s Ice Cream flavors. From popular media collaborations to new takes on classic ideas, Jeni’s is always innovating. Last year, the Columbus-based brand released not only my favorite Jeni’s ice cream flavor, but my favorite ice cream, period. Created in collaboration with Australian artist CJ Hendry, Opaque is a visual and flavor experience you have to see and taste to believe. The brand recommends trying this flavor combination before learning the flavor notes, so I’ll hold spoilers on the exact flavor profile until later.

As of this week, Opaque is back in Jeni’s Ice Cream scoop shops and on the brand’s webstore. This is a very limited flavor, available while supplies last. I implore you to get your hands on this returning Jeni’s ice cream as soon as possible. Last year, I could only secure a single pint for myself; between what I ate for review note-taking and what I shared with others in pure “can you believe this?” excitement, I didn’t have nearly enough for recreational enjoyment. Rest assured, I will be stocking up this time around. Based on social media’s reaction to the return, I have a feeling others will be too. Jeni’s Opaque Ice Cream Spoilers To Follow

Opaque’s official flavor notes are black cocoa, espresso fudge, and balsamic cherry. All three of these are the same super-dark brown, making for a truly unique visual experience. This is, appropriately, opaque; you will not be able to tell what’s in any given spoonful thanks to the single shared color between the ice cream, fudge swirl, and jam. What follows are my original flavor notes from when I first tried it last year. I have no reason to believe the recipe has changed this time around, meaning we are once again on the precipice of an 11/10 ice cream masterpiece from Jeni’s Ice Cream.

“Holy cow, this is rich. The chocolate is beyond fudgey, to the point that I had to remind myself this didn’t actually have any hot fudge on it. Black cocoa is often used to build a less bitter dark chocolate flavor, and this is a perfect example of that. OPAQUE tastes like dark chocolate brownie batter (and we don’t need to ask any questions about why I’m super familiar with eating that). This is without a doubt the best chocolate ice cream I’ve ever had, and it might be the best ice cream I’ve ever had.”
