IHOP isn’t exactly known for its changing cuisine. Its menu is, for the most part, utterly down-the-line, and it serves up classic breakfast dishes day in, day out, without any fear of rocking the boat. When it does do something a little bit exciting, like offering bottomless pancakes or changing its coffee, it can still feel a little muted, especially compared to the likes of a chain like Taco Bell, which seems to offer some new creation every single day (we point to the butter chicken taco for your consideration there).

However, one recent move at an IHOP in the Bronx did pique our interest. Eagle-eyed customers have spotted that one location is serving an Oxtail Omelette. Consider us intrigued.

Oxtail Omelette: Your New Favorite Dish

News of this IHOP’s Oxtail Omelette emerged when pictures of its menu began to appear online. According to Instagram account @spiritualword, the Oxtail Omelette, which was spotted in the Bronx and is apparently at select New York locations, is made with braised oxtail, cheddar cheese, red and green peppers, onions, and avocado. It’s then served with a side of pancakes, in true IHOP fashion.

Alongside the Oxtail Omelette are a few other dishes that seem to be specific to Bronx-based IHOPs. These locations are also serving chopped cheese and sweet chili wings, as well as shrimp tacos, and a portion of oxtail on its own.

How Do Customers Feel About This New Dish?

Response has been slightly mixed. Some people have responded in the affirmative, and those people include none other than Cardi B. The rapper commented on @spiritualword’s post announcing the Oxtail Omelette, stating, “I might have to make that trip.” Another person, meanwhile, said, “Wrap this oxtail business up,” and the general response seems to be one of surprise over genuine excitement for the dish.

It’s also worth mentioning that, unless we’re proved very wrong, isn’t really going to be a widespread addition to IHOP’s menu. Users on Reddit pointed to the localized nature of this offer, and it’s likely the franchisee of these Bronx-based stores that has chosen to put Oxtail Omelette front and center.

What Is Oxtail?

Sort of exactly what it sounds like. This cut comes from the tail of cattle, which is chopped into chunks and typically used in soups and stews or braised. It’s a gelatin-rich, fatty cut and is traditionally inexpensive, but when cooked properly, it can be totally delicious. It’s more commonly used in Caribbean, African, European, and Asian cuisine, and so it’s no surprise that its use at IHOP is raising a couple of eyebrows. Oxtail with IHOP pancake syrup? Sure, we guess.
