I don’t know what level of sweet tooth it takes to decide to put an entire slice of cake in a milkshake. Clearly, one I’ve never been brave enough to experiment with. But Portillo’s has been doing it for years with its famous Chocolate Cake Shake, and it seems someone decided there was still room for improvement.

Their solution? Oreos. Lots and lots of them.

The Chicago-born chain has teamed up with Oreo for three limited-time desserts, including a new Oreo Cake Shake that swaps the chocolate cake for an Oreo-packed white cake. There’s also an Oreo Cake and a regular Oreo Shake, for anyone who would prefer to keep their cake and milkshake separate.

Meet the New Oreo Cake Shake

If you’re unfamiliar with Portillo’s Chocolate Cake Shake, the concept is wonderfully simple. They take a slice of their famous chocolate cake and blend it into a milkshake. Actual cake. Frosting and all.

It’s been one of the chain’s signature desserts for years, and it’s not hard to see why. A milkshake is already good. A slice of cake is already good. Putting them together seems like a logical next step, even if it’s not one most of us would think to take.

Now they’ve given the whole thing an Oreo makeover.

The new Oreo Cake Shake starts with a hand-spun vanilla shake, blends in Portillo’s new Oreo Cake, and finishes with crushed Oreo cookie pieces on top.

And this isn’t just a regular slice of cake with a few cookies scattered over it. The Oreo Cake is made with white cake mixed with crushed Oreo pieces, covered in Oreo frosting, and topped with even more cookie pieces.

So you’ve got Oreos in the cake, Oreos in the frosting, Oreos on top of the cake, and then more Oreos on top of the milkshake. I’m beginning to think they might like Oreos.

I’m a big fan of them using vanilla instead of chocolate for the shake. With all those Oreo pieces and frosting involved, there’s already plenty going on. And the vanilla should let the cookie flavor come through rather than competing with it.

I’d be very interested to know how much actual cake you get in each sip. I imagine the texture is half the appeal, especially if you end up with little bits of cake and cookie coming through the straw.

There Are Two More Oreo Desserts, Too

If the thought of drinking cake is a bit much for you, Portillo’s has two other options.

The first is the Oreo Cake itself, which you can order as a regular slice rather than having someone put it in a blender. It’s the same white cake with crushed Oreo cookies, Oreo frosting, and more cookie pieces on top.

Then there’s the Oreo Shake, a hand-spun vanilla milkshake mixed with crushed Oreo cookies. Cookies-and-cream milkshakes have been around forever and there’s a good reason for that. I do like that Portillo’s has given people the choice between a straightforward cookie shake and one with actual cake blended into it.

But I know which one I’d be ordering.

When Can You Get the OREO Desserts?

All three desserts launched nationwide at Portillo’s on October 6th and are available for a limited time while supplies last.

There’s also a deal for Portillo’s Perks members. From October 12th through October 18th, loyalty members can get a slice of the new Oreo Cake for $1 with a purchase of $5 or more. The offer is limited to one discounted slice per qualifying transaction, with additional terms applying.

You can find participating locations and order through Portillo’s website.

I love a good Oreo dessert, but the Cake Shake has my full attention. I’ve had plenty of cookies-and-cream milkshakes, and I’ve eaten my fair share of cake. I’ve just never had someone blend the two together for me. Although now that I know it’s an option, I’m wondering why I’ve been eating them separately all these years.
