A Beloved ‘90s Breakfast Cereal Is Back

A lot has happened since 1996. Gen Z became adults, the DVD became obsolete, phones became portable computers, and jeans became low-rise, then high-rise, then low-rise again. Basically, a lot of things became (I think that’s what Michelle Obama’s book, Becoming, is about; just kidding). Speaking of which, a classic Post cereal that was released in 1996, discontinued in 2018, then brought back for a limited run in Walmart in January of 2021, is (be)coming back this summer—and this time, it’s here to stay! That’s right, Waffle Crisp cereal is back on the shelves, baybee!

If you are like me and also have never tried the seemingly ingenious breakfast food mashup that is Waffle Crisp, it looks like bloated, poofy Corn Chex and apparently is meant to taste (and feel) like waffles and maple syrup. As a weirdo who enjoys both soggy cereal and soggy waffles, I feel like this cereal would be divine if fully saturated with milk. Sweet maple milk. Mmmmmm. Seems like a breakfast food marriage for the ages. A hole-y matrimony, if you will.

Oddly enough, this isn’t the first waffle-shaped cereal to come and go (and then come back) since 1996. Eggo had a similar waffle-y cereal product they discontinued in 2012, then brought back in 2019 due to popular demand on social media. If there’s one thing to take away from all this, it’s that people really like waffles, and they like them (perhaps less expectedly) in cereal form.

It’s still unclear how fast this summer release will roll out. But whether the cereal will be available at most stores this week or is slowly rolling out through the end of August, Waffle Crisp seems like a unique and delicious addition to the already growing collection of cereals that are supposed to taste like other foods (lookin’ at you, Oreo O’s, Cookie Crisp, and Cinnamon Toast Crunch). And given the popular “pancake cereal” TikTok trend of recent years, now seems like a natural time to bring back a mini waffle cereal. I can’t wait to try it while singing “Do I like waffles (crisps)? Yeah I like waffles (crisps)” to myself as I devour an entire bowlful.
