Earlier this month, we came to you with news that Premier Protein added two caffeinated, coffeehouse-inspired flavors to their repertoire of protein shakes: Mocha and Caramel Macchiato. And now, I’ve tried them, and I have lots to say.
These ready-to-drink shakes pack 30g of protein and are not only flavored like coffee drinks, but are caffeinated like coffee drinks, too, all with no added sugar. These shakes are for the folks who don’t want to mix up their own #Proffee. They’re for people who can’t afford both a coffee drink and egg bites from Starbucks, and also can’t afford to be all brain-foggy and hangry all day. These shakes are for the masses.
Premier Protein has offered what could be a one-stop-shop for a great morning set-up: easy, convenient, quick, caffeinated, and satiating. But, do they taste good? Or would that be too good to be true? I found out for you!
- Premier Protein Caramel Macchiato

At first whiff, it smells like coffee, not a protein shake, which is a great first impression. It’s thicker than an iced macchiato that you would get from Starbucks, but it’s also not gloopy or heavy. It’s actually a nice texture, as I tend to like drinks with a little heft. The coffee flavor is present, but doesn’t overpower the caramel, and there’s no real, detectable aftertaste. This is definitely something best enjoyed over ice, since the ice would a) keep it cold and b) help provide some agitation to help redistribute the flavor that sunk to the bottom. Especially if you’re like me and part of the experience of drinking iced coffee is the satisfying sound of stirring the ice.

- Premier Protein Mocha

This is a good chocolate protein shake that also happens to be caffeinated. That is to say, that there’s nothing super special about the flavor of this one compared to a lot of other chocolate protein shakes (and I’ve tried a fair few). It’s not bad, by any means, but it lacks the coffee flavor that I expect from a mocha. The texture is similar to the caramel macchiato, which is a big pro. The flavor is great if you hate the taste of coffee but need the caffeine, but disappointing if your pretentious a*s thinks you’re above drinking chocolate milk. Put some respect on that elite beverage.
