New Doritos just dropped and it’s not the flavor that’s a big deal. No, the big deal is that the new Doritos are PROTEIN Doritos. If you’re on a GLP-1 and you like salty snacks that stain the tips of your fingers, I presume this is very good news. Here’s how they differ from regular Doritos…the carbs and protein are actually pretty different!
Protein Doritos (10 chips/serving):
150 calories
8g fat
1-1.5g saturated fat
8g carbs
10g protein
Regular Doritos (12 chips/serving):
150 calories
8g fat
1g saturated fat
18g carbs
2g protein
Question is, do they taste good? These new Protein Doritos are hitting stores this month in two flavors: Nacho Cheese (duh) and Sweet & Tangy BBQ. I got my hands on a bag of each and, since I’m the protein chips expert around here, tried them both to see how they stack up against regular Doritos AND other protein chips.

- Protein Doritos Nacho Cheese

Pros: These are covered in A LOT of nacho cheese flavor dust, so they have a bold cheese flavor. They’re thin and very crispy and the chips themselves have a nice fried flavor. They’re a lot like regular Doritos, but truly a little thinner and oilier and crunchier—isn’t that something? My colleague Justine Sterling said they kind of taste like chips you’d get at a taqueria because they have that nice oily quality, and that seems like a job well done for Frito-Lay if you ask moi.
Cons: They do go to mush in your mouth a little. I’ve eaten a lot of protein chips, so I’m familiar with this phenomenon, but there’s something about the milk protein that gets a little pasty in your mouth as you chew. I do think it’s much less offensive in these than it is in other protein chips, trust me. These are actually really good.

- Protein Doritos Sweet & Tangy BBQ

Pros: One thing I’ve learned during my protein chip taste tests is that tortilla-style chips generally seem to be better suited to taking on protein. The exception? Wilde’s protein chips, which are more like potato chips but they’re made with chicken and egg whites. Sounds horrible, works great. Other protein “chips” (crisps, really) have that weird pasty protein effect in your mouth. Once again, these new Protein Doritos do a good job of minimizing the mush. And if you’ve had a hankering for BBQ chips but can’t eat most BBQ chips for dietary reasons, this seasoning dust will hit the spot.
Cons: It’s a good BBQ flavor, but all in all, these Protein Doritos pale in comparison to their Nacho Cheese counterparts. I’m slightly curious why they’d go with this oddball flavor rather than Cool Ranch, tbh!

What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s Original Savory Thins. Fat free plain yogurt (usually Fage or Nancy’s). Honeycrisp apples. Sweet cream coffee creamer for my at-home Americanos. A frozen cauliflower crust pizza and some jarred mushrooms to top it with. Old El Paso Stand ‘N Stuff taco shells and Gardein Ground Be’f, even though I think “be’f” is a nightmarish contraction.
Favorite ranking: Stouffer’s frozen dinners. I don’t own a microwave (I get my cancers the old fashioned way!), so I love taste testing things that I don’t really buy to eat at home.
Least favorite ranking: Soy sauce. Don’t get me wrong, I love soy sauce—but consuming that much sodium in one sitting is probably illegal in some countries. Our frozen enchilada taste test was a close second; the smell of microwaved corn tortillas still haunts me.
