If you’re the kind of person who loves fall flavors and doesn’t get enough sleep, you may be a fan of the Pumpkin Spice Latte. But if that’s not satisfying your needs, or if you’re just not a PSL fan, then you’re in luck, because there’s a new fall-themed caffeinated beverage in town.
Yerbaé (an energy drink company that sounds like a pirate talking about your significant other) just announced it’s launching the world’s first pumpkin spice energy drink this fall. As an avid pumpkin spice fan (at least when it’s done well), I am nothing if not intrigued.
So what is Yerbaé? And what would a pumpkin spice energy drink even taste like?
It turns out, Yerbaé is a vegan energy drink that is based on yerba mate (a popular South American herbal tea) and contains zero calories, zero sugar, and 160 mg of “natural caffeine.” The new Yerbaé Pumpkin Spice will include added “pumpkin spice” flavors of nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger. Sweet! Or I guess, not as sweet? According to the company, the Yerbaé Pumpkin Spice tastes like “walking through a pumpkin patch, but as you pass each pumpkin, a slow clap builds that delivers an energy so perfect it pumps you up for all three months of fall.” And if that doesn’t clarify anything for you, that’s because it sounds like utter nonsense. This thing could taste like a pie or a candle or a hot dog, but I guess we won’t really know until we try it.
Interestingly, Yerbaé is building hype for their new pumpkin spice energy drink by running a smear campaign against PSLs, called “See You Latte, PSL!” The ads are reminding people that PSLs contain a ton of sugar and artificial ingredients, and are “like drinking liquid cake” in terms of nutritional value. Plus, they come with “inevitable name misspellings,” “insanely long coffee shop lines,” and “inflation price hikes.” Look, Yerbaé, I am absolutely aware that PSLs are like drinking liquid cake. THAT’S WHAT MAKES THEM SO SPECIAL! Fall is the only time of year when adults can walk around drinking dessert in a cup and nobody bats an eye. Just let us have this! Plus, are energy drinks (yerba mate-based or otherwise) really that much better for us?
Well, this one claims to be. So naturally, I will have to try it. I happen to like the Guayaki brand of yerba mate and if this one isn’t too different, I could totally see a pumpkin spice version being delicious. But I can’t get my hands on it quite yet. According to the company’s website, you can pre-order the Yerbaé Pumpkin Spice now and they will start shipping as soon as September 5.
As excited as I am to try this new pumpkin beverage, I wish the company would stop slandering the PSL! It is a special seasonal drink, it does in fact exist outside of Starbucks, and most of all, people should be able to drink what they want. There is plenty of room in this caffeine-loving, pumpkin spice-obsessed world for both PSLs and Yerbaé Pumpkin Spice energy drinks to coexist. No need to pit two pumpkin spice queens against each other.
