McDonald’s Launches New Grimace Meal with Purple Burger

It must be difficult to be a mascot. You sit there, dormant, sometimes for years, before a brand decides that it’s your time to shine again – and then, suddenly, you’re thrust back into the spotlight. Talk about whiplash. This year, that seems to be happening to Grimace, the McDonald’s mascot who often takes a backseat to the titular Mr. Ronald. In the last few weeks, though, we’ve seen a flurry of Grimace-related news in its international restaurants, including new Grimace merch in Singapore and now, a new Grimace burger in Germany.

German stores aren’t just getting a new burger, either – they’re actually getting a whole new Grimace menu. This big ol’ furry purple blob is getting his time to shine.

McDonald’s Germany New Grimace Menu

The new Grimace menu over in Germany was reported by @snackolator, and ordering it is, according to the McDonald’s Germany website, a way to make every day feel like your birthday. Cute! (You’ll have to translate the above website into English, just FYI, unless you speak German – but what better way to revisit your language skills?) The new items on offer are:

Purple BBQ

This is the flagship offer here, and what an offer it is. The Purple BBQ is a purple burger with a purple bun, a purple slice of cheese, and purple sauce, as well as a Spicy Western Sauce, onions, and lettuce. Talk about a visual feast here, although your enjoyment of it will entirely depend on how much you like purple food. You might be pleased to hear that this burger gets its coloring from E163, a natural pigment derived from sources like grape skins.

Grimace Shake

A purple shake topped with whipped cream. McDonald’s is billing the flavor here as a surprise, but a closer look at the ingredients list (which you’ll again have to translate into English) shows that it has blueberry-flavored syrup. So, it’s blueberry.

Purple Berry & Cream Sauce

A lil’ tub of purple sauce here, which McDonald’s says combines “fruity blueberry puree and sour cream into a heavenly creamy dip.” It also suggests using it with your nuggets or fries. Sure, why not?

Purple McPops with Blueberry Filling

These little purple cake pops have a blueberry filling on the inside, and on their exterior, they’re coated with an icing-like shell and crispy chips on top. A nice little sweet treat, methinks.

Purple Cream Cheese Pie

A twist on the famous McDonald’s apple pie here, this time with a purple shell and a duo of blueberry filling and cream cheese inside. This sort of reminds us of Jollibee’s recent ube pie, although without any ube in it.

On top of all of this, McDonald’s Germany is also selling a Grimace keychain, and every purchase of one will prompt a donation of two euros to the McDonald’s Children’s Aid Foundation. Reason enough to book a trip to Berlin, right? Sadly, there’s no word on whether this menu will end up in other countries, so for now, Germany gets all the Grimace-related fun.
