Supermarkets changing their recipes isn’t rare. They do it literally every day. And yet, it’s usually a bit of a sting when it happens; now and again, a store will alter an item for the better, but generally speaking, these changes can often feel like a cost-cutting measure that leaves a once-beloved product worse off. We’ve been seeing this happen a lot at Aldi this year (sourdough, beef sausage, granola bars, chicken nuggets…), but other places have been mixing things up, too. One of those places is Sam’s Club, whose enchiladas are now looking a little bit different.

And you guessed it: People are saying that now, they’re worse. Let’s dig in.

Sam’s Club Member’s Mark Rotissie Chicken Enchiladas: Something Feels Different…

Last week, a Reddit thread popped up in the Sam’s Club Subreddit asking the simple question, “what did you do to the enchiladas?” accompanied by a shocked emoji. A picture of Sam’s Club Member’s Mark Rositesserie Chicken Enchiladas accompanied the query, showing that the prepared dish is now being made with cojita cheese scattered on top. This cheese used to be mixed in with the filling, but now, it’s been separated – and apparently, this seemingly simple change has caused some big issues. The original Redditor called the new version of the enchiladas “disgusting,” while another said that they were awful.

A person claiming to be an employee in the Reddit thread confirmed some other apparent changes to the enchiladas. “Chicken changed also, it’s more of a ‘pot pie’ chicken and tortillas are corn now instead of flour,” they said. Apparently, there are now no chives in the recipe, either. A different employee said they were also not a fan of the alteration: “I hate it, it’s ugly AF lol,” they stated. Hard to argue with that one, particularly as cojita cheese doesn’t melt – so this new topping will just sit on top as warmed, slightly softened blobs.

And We Must Ask…Why?

It’s hard to know the exact reasoning behind Sam’s Club’s change to its enchiladas, but we’re guessing it might have been to speed up prep. Adding the cheese on top instead of mixing it in feels more efficient – and hey, maybe there was a wealth of customer complaints about these enchiladas we’re not privy to, a kind of alternate universe to this thread. We’re not sure, but it’s hard to deny that this alteration has left a fair few customers disappointed.
