Spooky Eggs

Personally, it’s hard to think of a more classic hosting appetizer than deviled eggs. And think about it, the name’s spooky in its own right. But, there’s a couple of simple and easy tricks you could use to take deviled eggs to a whole other level for the Halloween festivities. First off, you can boil the eggs in water that has frozen blueberries and a drop of black food coloring thrown in. After they’re cooked you can lightly roll the boiled eggs (in the shells) on your counter to crack them and pop them back in the water. Put everything in the fridge once the pot comes to a safe temperature and let everything become cold together. Peel as usual and your eggs are going to have a flavorless black spiderweb pattern on the exterior of the whites.

When cutting your eggs in half to make the filling with the yolks, add some extra spice and maybe even an extra drop of red food coloring to get a bold orange hue and these eggs are going to be screaming Halloween spirit. Pipe in the orange yolk filling in however you think will look best and these are going to not only be delicious but actually beautiful… in a macabre sort of way.

Caesar’s Betrayal

To make a long Roman history short, the fall of the Roman Republic began as the result of the infamous uprising against Julius Caesar. Roman senators betrayed Caesar and stabbed him over 20 times. Subsequently, the Roman Empire rose from its ashes. All of this I hadn’t heard until one Halloween when I came home from school to my lovely mother’s spooky decorations and a three-course dinner laid out for us to munch on before setting out for a night of trick-or-treating. The first course was the “Caesar’s Betrayal” salad.

It was essentially your classic caesar salad with crunchy romaine lettuce, caesar dressing, parmesan cheese, and croutons. But they weren’t just any croutons. She’d taken stale bread, cut them into the shape of little daggers, dressed them lightly, baked them, and stabbed them vertically into the upper layer of the salad. Naturally, I was mystified by her wit and creativity. It was gory, but not so much that it was unsuitable to little kids. It was undeniably cute and clever, and hey, it was even educational. But I think the best part about it was that it wasn’t just something shaped like a ghost, a bug, or Frankenstein — it was a new look on how any of the spooky, scary stories kids hear can be used as Halloween fuel.

Pot Pie

Okay, okay, maybe not everyone’s a history buff. I’m not judging, I promise. And I definitely understand that the last suggestion isn’t going to be every kid’s dream either. Between the history lesson and a child’s natural aversion to anything green, we’ve got to plan on putting at least something more kitschy and traditional on the table. That’s where I think this cozy Halloween pot pie comes in.

You can make them as mini, individually-sized pot pies, or as one shareable treat. And, you can carve the pastry top to look like any spooky figure you want. From the face of a jack-o-lantern to skulls and bones, your options are endless. Your choose your own adventure journey doesn’t end there though. You can make any filling you want! Don’t feel limited to chicken, some kind of beef stew would be great too! You could even make these as little shepherd’s pies instead if you got the potatoes thick enough.
