Back in February, Frito Lay announced a new Doritos flavor would be hitting shelves for a limited time: Spicy Pineapple Jalapeño. If you haven’t gotten around to trying them yet (perhaps because you just found out that they exist), the good news is that they still seem to be pretty widely available. Are they worth your hard-earned chip-buying dollars? Yes. Let me explain…
These chips promise a “jalapeño kick” and a “tangy pineapple flavor” on the finish. And that’s what they deliver. Do I personally think that “tangy pineapple flavor” tastes good on Doritos? I do not—it’s a little astringent and kind of lingers on your palate as you eat, but I can see other people liking it.
Pros: These chips are part of a cool project for a good cause! The flavor is a collab with Houston chef and James Beard Award nominee Chris Williams, who is also founder and CEO of Lucille’s 1913, a nonprofit that combats food insecurity and food waste. Frito Lay donated $50,000 to Williams’s org as part of the collab.
Cons: The sweet, tangy flavor profile is a little bit odd. When I’m in the mood for a sweet-savory Doritos flavor, I’ll probably stick with Spicy Sweet Chili, which remains one of the best Doritos flavors on the market.
