A new online rumor is saying that Starbucks will be offering an unlimited subscription service that will get you all the coffee you can drink for $65. It’s not true, and here’s what you need to know.

Where did this rumor start?

It began with an April 10th Instagram post by the satire account The Nuttington Post, which describes itself as providing “Daily headlines you wish were real,” and provides a warning that they are “Not affiliated with actual brands.” Under a mocked up picture of an “Unlimited Sip Menu,” the post said: “BREAKING: Starbucks has announced the release of their $65 a month subscription that will grant you unlimited drinks. People are going crazy about this, with many wondering if Starbucks will make a profit if people take advantage heavily. Officials have yet to state the fine details of the subscription, but it’s safe to say this is exciting news for many. Will you be buying this?”

From there, the rumor was quickly shared across social media, with a number of Instagram posts and Reddit threads sharing the false information. It didn’t help that Starbucks recently revamped their rewards program, which probably didn’t help the confusion.

What’s their new rewards program all about?

While Starbucks hasn’t suggested they’d consider a subscription model, they did just revamp their customer rewards program, offering three new tiers—Green, Gold & Reserve—with new rewards and benefits for each tier.

The lowest “Green Tier” works much like the previous rewards program, awarding customers one “star” per dollar spent, which expire after six months. You also get a free treat on your birthday,

While the previous program gave you one point (or as Starbucks calls them, “stars”) per dollar spent, which you could redeem for free beverages, food or merchandise, the new service actually unlocks more stars per purchase.

The lowest “Green Tier” still works like the old rewards system, giving you one star per dollar spent, with stars expiring after six months. But if you earn 500 stars in a 12-month period, you’ll unlock the “Gold Tier,” which gives you 1.2 stars per dollar spent, and those stars never expire. If you unlock 2,500 stars in a year, you’ll unlock “Reserve Tier,” which gives you 1.7 stars per dollar, and unlocks exclusive merchandise and curated events, including “all-expenses paid trips to exciting destinations like Tokyo, Milan or Costa Rica to explore and celebrate coffee culture globally.”
