Subway sandwiches are never really that spicy, are they? Let’s be real here. Quick? Yes. Long? Sometimes. Providing various levels of satisfaction? It’s all in the eye of the beholder. But spicy? It’s never been the chain’s top priority.

However, the times, they are a’changin’, and in the current sandwich climate, spice is everything. Everyone from Wendy’s to Dairy Queen to Publix is either introducing new spicy sandwiches or reworking their existing ones, and Subway has now raised the bar on its offer with a whole new spicy menu, complete with a new bread. The only problem for US customers, though, is that it’s only in Canada. Here’s the deal.
Subway’s Wannabe Spicy Menu
The restaurant is dubbing its new Canadian menu the “Wannabe Spicy,” and according to its press release, it’s pushing against the Hot Ones approach of challenging diners. “We didn’t want to add more ‘spice noise’ in a landscape that challenges guests to ‘prove something’,” says Subway chef John Botelho in a statement. “We wanted to provide Canadians with a menu that perfectly fits their spice tolerance and preference. Our ‘Mild,’ ‘Wild,’ and ‘Wicked’ approach gives Canadians the chance to choose their own adventure, with sandwich builds that bring the heat and pack maximum flavour and freshness.”
As for that Mild, Wild, and Wicked approach, they each apply to one sandwich each. Here they are:
Mild Piri-Piri Ranch Chicken
A sub built with Canadian rotisserie chicken, cheddar cheese, bacon, and a bunch of vegetables (crisp lettuce, spinach, tomato, cucumber, green pepper, and red onion). Then, a combo of piri-piri sauce and ranch sauce is added to the sandwich, for a combo of spice and creaminess.
Wild Hot Honey Chicken
This sandwich starts with rotisserie chicken, too, and adds on habanero Jack cheese, lettuce, spinach, cucumber, green pepper, red onion, and banana peppers. Then, it’s drizzled with Subway’s new Hot Honey sauce.
Wicked Nashville-Style Deli
The spiciest of the bunch, the Wicked Nashville-Style Deli combines Black Forest ham, pepperoni, salami, habanero Jack cheese, lettuce, spinach, tomato, green pepper, red onion, and banana peppers. Then, it’s sauce time. Garlic aioli, house sandwich sauce, and a Nashville hot sauce are added on top.
And What About This New Bread?
Yep! Subway’s also got a new Ghost Pepper bread here, which you can order as part of these sandwiches or, we guess, for a different sub. Ghost peppers are screamingly hot, and we’d imagine that this bread doesn’t quite go there, but hopefully it gives these sandwiches a little extra kick.
How Long Will These Sandwiches Be Around?
Not long, guys. This is a limited-time menu, and we’d imagine it’ll be available in Canada for a couple of months at the most. But who knows? If it’s a big hit, maybe it’ll make its way to the US. We’ll just have to wait and see.
