Lather Up! A New Ice Cream Flavor Is Inspired by Sunscreen

Ever slathered on a sunscreen that smells so good you could almost eat it? Lookin’ at you, Banana Boat and Sun Bum. Well, now you actually can experience the taste of sunblock, sort of, because a sunscreen-inspired ice cream just hit the market. The new product is a collaboration between Sunscoop, a plant-based frozen dessert company, and Supergoop!, a sunscreen/protective skincare company, which, it turns out, has absolutely nothing to do with Gwyneth Paltrow’s infamous Goop (so, no, there will be no ice cream flavor collabs in the realm of non-traditionally scented candles).

It’s called Sweet Sunshine and it’s “inspired by broad-spectrum sunscreen with a dewy finish.” I was hoping that its flavor would perfectly match the bouquet of scents one gets when cracking open a bottle of Banana Boat sunscreen. But the actual flavor is described as “passionfruit, vanilla, ginger & turmeric, and pearl powder.” Not sure exactly how that combination of flavors is reminiscent of sunscreen, but it does sound super-interesting and at least vaguely sunscreen-y. I can definitely see how the “dewy finish” part makes sense, and that explains the pearl powder. And hey, whatever it tastes like, it’s kind of awesome that they made an ice cream that, much like Edward Cullen, is both vegetarian and sparkles in the sun.

Now, where to get this ice cream? It was available briefly through an ice cream/Supergoop! Sunscreen giveaway earlier this month, but since that has ended, there are a couple of places you can pick up this little pint o’ SPF-inspired dessert. You can get it from the Suntruck, Sunscoop’s pop-up ice cream truck that will be going around Los Angeles on August 12-14 (it previously made stops in NYC, Chicago, and the Hamptons). Or you can order it on the Sunscoop website for $63 for four pints (or $70 for six). HOLY HECK, THAT’S EXPENSIVE. What a time to be alive. If you have the means or happen to live in L.A., please try this stuff and tell me if it at least tastes a little like sunscreen. I’ll have to live vicariously through you because I’m not sure I’m ready to drop $63 on sunscreen ice cream. And I’m sure many of you are in the same Banana Boat.
