How to Get Your Hands on Taco Bell Baja Blast Gelato

If American fast food-ified Mexican food is your thing, but you just wish it more frequently involved (somewhat) authentic Italian desserts, then you, my friend, are in luck. Grab your spoons and call your nonna because the same American fast-food machine that brought us the Crunchwrap Supreme and a tostada made with a gigantic Cheez-It just dropped something new, blue, and full of Mtn Dew. That’s right, you can now get Mtn Dew Baja Blast Gelato at Taco Bell locations across the country. Yes, you read that correctly. Yes, this is insane. Yes, I am going to be in the car and headed to Taco Bell, spoon in hand, by the time I finish this sentence.

How to get Baja Blast Gelato

This stuff became available nationwide on Tuesday, September 3 for a limited time to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Baja Blast. It is exclusive to Taco Bell Rewards Members using the Taco Bell app and you have to get it at a Taco Bell location—you can’t order this one for delivery. You can also only get four cups of Baja Blast Gelato per order. Taco Bell is really out here trying to stretch their stock of this as far as it will go.

What can we expect from Baja Blast Gelato?

This isn’t the first time Baja Blast Gelato has been spotted at Taco Bell. The violently blue-green frozen treat was developed by PepsiCo in partnership with Taco Bell and had a super limited release in 2023 at just one Taco Bell location in Irvine, California, which is how Taco Bell usually tests new items (much like the whole Cheez-It Crunchwrap/Tostada situation before it went nationwide). Now it’s 2024 a “tropical lime”-flavored concoction is back on the Taco Bell menu, and according to a press release, it will perfectly complement “any cheesy, spicy, saucy order on the Taco Bell menu”.

So far, online reviews are mixed. Some people who’ve tried it love it, saying it is has a refreshing and tasty sorbet vibe that makes it great after a pile of nachos or a Chalupa. Others are actively angry about it, saying it is not gelato and therefore it is wrong. Now, I am not gelato (so therefore I may be wrong), but it would seem that this stuff does contain cream, according to the nutrition facts. That points in the “it is, in fact, gelato” direction. But do cream and Mtn Dew Baja Blast Flavored Caffeine-Free Syrup (and some other ingredients) a gelato make? I guess that is up to you to decide. Or your local Taco-Bell-loving Italian grandma.

A press release from Taco Bell about the nationwide release of Mtn Dew Baja Blast Gelato contained another tidbit of interesting news: Apparently, a Mtn Dew Baja Blast Pie is coming to Taco Bell later this year (another part of the 20 year celebraish).

So if you want to try this gelato, we recommend getting it as soon as possible—these kinds of things dew tend to sell out fast. If you miss out, don’t even trip—there’s always the Mtn Dew Baja Blast Pie to look forward to. And honestly, if you are headed to a Taco Bell, even without any of this novel bright green-blue shenanigans, we’re sure you’ll have a (baja) blast…and maybe a Crunchwrap to go with it.
